This Moss Restaurant Review is from our stay at The Retreat at Blue Lagoon, Iceland, where Moss is the luxury hotel's one-Michelin-star restaurant.

.

Moss Restaurant Hours and Reservations

Moss Restaurant is open exclusively for dinner Wednesdays to Sundays from 6-11pm, so it's worth keeping this in mind when reserving The Retreat at Blue Lagoon. As there's quite limited seating, we recommend that clients reserve their dinner at the same time we make their hotel reservation.

Moss Restaurant Menu and Food

Moss Restaurant only offers tasting menus. This was the tasting menu for our visit:

.

A vegan tasting menu was also available:

.

The first of several “snacks” was stellar: crispy cod skin with miso dip, delivering umami and textural contrast in spades.

.

This amuse bouche duo was also very tasty; my favorite, in the foreground, featured black truffle.

.

The wholegrain bread with cumin was so delicious we later requested seconds . . . and thirds. It was that good. It was accompanied by two different kinds of olive oil for dipping, and Icelandic black lava salt.

.

.

These mini gougeres were also wonderful.

.

The first official dish on the menu were these winter vegetables, including wild mushrooms (morels are a favorite) in a creamy sauce of 60-month aged Parmesan.

.

The next course of Blue Fin Tuna was also very good, with freshly grated wasabi from wasabi that's grown in Iceland.

.

This Icelandic “Balik”-style salmon was simple in its presentation, yet my favorite of the savory dishes, excluding the snacks and amuses bouches.

.

My teen's favorite savory dish was this very tender Icelandic Lamb, served atop spiced celeriac puree.

.

Made to look like an actual lava rock, the chocolate mousse dessert was rich and delicious, and served whimsically with ice cream that had chocolate antlers atop it.

.

.

Whimsy continued with this beautiful presentation of the mignardises: chocolate truffles, a pistachio macaron, and raspberry pâtes de fruits. As good as all of them were, my favorite was the buttery pistachio madeleine (final photo) which was served warm.

.

.

The Verdict

We greatly enjoyed our Moss Restaurant meal, highlights being the gougeres, crispy cod skin with miso, amuse bouche with black truffle, wholegrain bread, and the Balik-style salmon. Expensive? Yes, but so are all high-end meals in Iceland.
