Kaffivagninn is the oldest restaurant in Iceland, founded in 1935 by the Reykjavik harbor. It was also walking distance from our hotel, so we decided to try it for dinner one of our evenings.
.
Kaffivagninn Location and Hours
Kaffivagninn is located at Grandagarður 10, about a 16-minute walk from The Reykjavik EDITION, where we were staying. As we were there in February, it was a chilly walk, even in our winter coats, so dress warmly in winter. The restaurant serves breakfast from 8-11am daily; lunch from 11am, and dinner until 9:30pm.

Kaffivagninn Menu and Food
Kaffivagninn's menu includes both Icelandic specialties, such as its creamy seafood soup and smoked puffin on a waffle, as well as continental and international favorites such as Pan-fried lemon sole, wild mushroom Wellington, burger, and breaded lamb chops. Our recommendation: stick with the seafood.

Our teen's burger was good, but nothing remarkable.

.
My creamy seafood soup, on the other hand, was fantastic; I sopped up every last drop with the provided bread.

.
My husband, who typically orders fish and chips whenever he sees it on the menu, proclaimed Kaffivagninn's version the best in the world, the fish incredibly fresh and moist, with shatteringly crispy batter, no mean feat, given how many places he's eaten fish and chips over the years.

.
The three of us shared Rhubarb Pie for dessert, which was delicious and a wonderful ending to the meal.

.
The Verdict
Kaffivagninn offers excellent food in an unassuming, cozy cafe in downtown Reykjavik. Highlights were my husband's fish and chips and my creamy seafood soup.
