La Marlenaz, Verbier Restaurant Review

La Marlenaz, Verbier Restaurant Review

.

La Marlenaz in Verbier is nestled in the mountains at an altitude of 1895 meters (6217 feet), about a 1-1.5 hour walk from downtown Verbier. It's also possible to drive there in 10 minutes, but walking (or in winter, skiing) works up more of an appetite.

La Marlenaz Opening Days/Hours

During the summer, which is when we visited, the restaurant is open daily from 10am-5:30pm (until 10pm on Thursdays-Saturdays). From around mid-August until the end of October, the restaurant is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, and open Wednesdays-Sundays 10am-5:30pm. The restaurant has its fall closure November-mid-December, before reopening for the winter.

Since the terrace is very popular in summer, I highly recommend making a reservation in advance. The umbrellas provided welcome shade on a warm day.

La Marlenaz Menu and Food

The menu, billed as “mountain cuisine” has the Swiss classics: fondues, rostis, and croutes, but also something for just about everyone, from gazpacho and salads to trout and vegetarian chickpea curry. In the fall, game dishes with venison, chamois (a type of goat), and wild boar are featured.

I wanted to try fondue, which they're particularly known for, and opted for one with morel mushrooms. It bubbled merrily over a burner, and was served with bread for dipping, as well as piquant cornichons.

The great umami of the morels elevated the already delicious local cheese.

The Verdict

A hearty cheese fondue is a must-try at least once while in Verbier, and La Marlenaz provided a very satisfying version, particularly with the morel mushrooms. Service was excellent, both in English and in French. The views are beautiful from the well-shaded terrace, making it a great stop on a longer hike or destination in its own right.
