The Rotunda at Neiman Marcus, San Francisco, is a lovely setting for an indulgent lunch while in the Union Square area of downtown San Francisco. See our posts tagged San Francisco for our other San Francisco coverage and restaurant reviews.

The Rotunda at Neiman Marcus Location and Hours
The Rotunda is located on Level 4 of Neiman Marcus San Francisco, at 150 Stockton Street. It was a rainy day, so we arrived via Waymo, but it's a short walk from Powell Station, served by BART and Muni.
The Rotunda is open daily from 11am to 4pm, so for lunch and afternoon tea. Many restaurants in the city pack tables quite tightly, but thankfully there's a bit more space between tables (less so between the coveted window tables), with the greatest privacy in the half-moon shaped banquettes.

.
On a nicer day than the one we were dining, it's great to have a view over Union Square, as well as an excellent view of the stunning rotunda itself.

The Rotunda at Neiman Marcus Lunch Menu and Food

.

.
A nice aspect is the complimentary chicken consommé (especially on the chilly, rainy day we visited) and freshly baked popover with strawberry butter that we were served after we ordered.

.

.
The popover is buttery and rich, so you may want to order lighter fare than we did.

.
My husband enjoyed his Dungeness Crab Melt, with gruyere cheese and parmesan crusted sourdough bread. It came with fries, but salad can be substituted.

.
Our server said the Lobster Club is popular, and it was very fresh and tasty, if somewhat difficult to eat given its height. I'd have liked a bit more lobster meat given the price, but the avocado was plentiful. I opted for a side salad instead of potato chips.

.
Our teen said his Rotunda Burger was almost perfect. It was cooked exactly as he requested, but he regretted not noticing that the included cheese was American cheese, which he hates, instead of a nice sharp cheddar, and American cheese seemed rather incongruous on a menu that features lobster, crab, oysters, and a $130 seafood tower.

.
The Verdict
We enjoyed our lunch in the elegant setting of The Rotunda, especially the complimentary popovers, chestnut soup, burger, and lobster club sandwich. The American cheese was a weirdly lowbrow aspect of the burger, and we'd suggest asking for cheddar or gruyere cheese instead. Request one of the coveted window seats for good natural light, or for greater privacy, one of the banquette tables. And reserve well in advance, since tables tend to book up early.
