Auberge du Soleil Review, 1 Michelin Star

.

Auberge du Soleil in Napa Valley started as a restaurant, before adding the resort, so it seemed fitting to enjoy a lunch at this 1-Michelin-starred restaurant as part of our site inspection visit.

.

Auberge du Soleil Restaurant Location and Hours

Located at 180 Rutherford Hill Road, The Restaurant at Auberge du Soleil is open to the resort's guests for breakfast, and to both resort guests and outside guests for lunch from 11:30am-2:15pm daily, and for dinner from 5:30-9pm. Reservations are required, and can be made with OpenTable or by calling 707-967-3111.

As befits a restaurant and resort whose name translates as “the sun inn,” the dining room is airy, with light woods and warm color accents.

Auberge du Soleil Menu and Food

Auberge du Soleil offers prix fixe menus, with a choice of two or three courses at lunch, and three or four courses at dinner; there's also a 6-course Chef's Tasting Menu. As we had limited time, we chose the two-course lunch menu for $95 per person.

After ordering, our server brought fresh levain bread, accompanied by butter and olive oil.

For my starter, I chose the Potato Gnocchi with Wild Mushrooms. While I'm not a big fan of foam, which obscured the gnocchi and mushrooms, the execution and taste were fantastic: plump, freshly made gnocchi made earthy with the delectable wild mushrooms and balanced with the nuttiness of the Parmigiano-Reggiano.

My husband chose the Delta Asparagus Soup, which was also delicious and enriched with small chunks of fresh lobster and lemon creme fraiche.

My husband's main, Wolfe Ranch Quail Salad with tender Little Gem lettuce, was cooked perfectly and a delightful contrast of flavors and textures. The perfect choice for a quail lover.

On this occasion, I was hungrier, so I opted for the Cabernet Braised Short Rib with Roman Artichokes and Swiss Chard. This was perfection, and so appropriate for wine country, even for guests who don't drink much, since most of the alcohol cooks off, leaving decadently glazed and tender meat. Ideal for a more substantial lunch, even if selecting the two-course option.

The Verdict

Our lunch at Auberge du Soleil was our best meal on this short getaway, far better than dinner at Press Restaurant. Particular highlights were the gnocchi with wild mushrooms starter and the cabernet braised short rib main, but everything we tried was delicious, and service was more attentive as well than at Press. Highly recommended.
