The Maldives are one of our favorite beach, snorkeling and diving destinations in the world, so much so that we've visited 3 times and stayed in 6 different Maldives luxury resorts. There's no question that the incredible views, overwater villas, marine life and service come at a price, but fortunately there are some excellent 4th night free offers that help.

We've always flown via the Middle East: Emirates First Class via Dubai, Etihad First Apartment via Abu Dhabi, Qatar Business Class via Doha–but you could also fly via Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Colombo, or some European cities, since Male Airport is quite well connected.

Cheval Blanc Randheli is our favorite Maldives luxury resort, given the spacious, high quality stand alone villas, each with a private infinity pool (one you could actually swim short laps in), the fantastic quality of the dining, and the superb kids' club staff. 2. Four Seasons Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru: 4th Night Free or 7th Night Free

My second favorite resort in the Maldives is Four Seasons Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru, especially the Sunrise Water Villa with Pool and Sunset Water Villa with Pool, although with young kids, you'll likely want a Beach Villa with a Pool.

The sand here, while not Amanpulo soft, was finer than at other Maldives resorts, and we loved the gorgeous views from Blu, where we had an a la carte breakfast each day. Landaa Giraavaru is closer to Baa Atoll, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, than the Four Seasons at Kuda Huraa and many other Maldivian resorts, so it's the ideal base for snorkeling with manta rays and great scuba diving. You can even sign up (fee applies) for Manta on Call, where you're given a phone and when mantas are spotted, you'll be whisked out on a speedboat to snorkel with them–potential dozens of mantas all around you! 3. Soneva Fushi: 4th Night Free, 6th and 7th Nights Free

Soneva Fushi is ideal for those whose idea of luxury is going back to nature, and going barefoot. The resort collects your shoes on the short boat ride from the seaplane to the resort (it's about a 30 minute seaplane ride from Male) and returns your shoes upon departure. The resort even wraps bicycle pedals in fabric, to be more comfortable for barefoot riders.

4. Four Seasons Maldives at Kuda Huraa: 4th Night Free

If you like the idea of the Maldives but don't want to take a seaplane, Four Seasons Maldives at Kuda Huraa is one of the few luxury resorts that can be reached by speedboat from Male: it takes about 25-30 minutes. It's a smaller island than Landaa Giraavaru, but there's still ample opportunity to take boat trips out for snorkeling and diving, and it's also a fun place to try surfing. Don't miss a relaxing spa treatment at the spa island, reached with its own little boat.
