Top 10 Four Seasons Hotels in the World, 2020

What are the Best Four Seasons Hotel and Resorts in the World? While I answered this reader question back in 2017, the luxury hotel and resort landscape is constantly changing, and since I last wrote that post, Four Seasons has opened a number of new locations, from Athens to Los Cabos and from Philadelphia to Tunis. Hence, it's time for an update! Without further ado, here are the Top 10 Four Seasons Hotels in the World, along with the Preferred Partner benefits available to TravelSort Clients:

1. Four Seasons Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru

The Four Seasons Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru, already popular among my clients who scuba dive, or who want to maximize their chances of snorkeling with manta rays (or even a whale shark, if lucky) during the summer months, recently renovated its Water Villas. The updated Water Villas have plenty of outdoor living space, with a swinging sofa, a 2nd floor loft, poolside daybed, and a 40 x 10 ft. infinity pool. Plus, if you've always wanted to try out a personal submarine, Four Seasons Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru offers rides in its DeepFlight submarine (the sub is similar to the one at Laucala Island in Fiji, although Laucala includes rides as part of its luxury all inclusive rate).

While the Four Seasons Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru certainly has stiff competition in the luxury segment, and there are various aspects that Cheval Blanc Randheli, Velaa and Joali do better, it's hard to beat the Baa Atoll location of Landaa Giraavaru, with great scuba diving and snorkeling closer to the resort, along with the legendary Four Seasons bed, consistently excellent service, and the chance for kids to meet other kids at the complimentary Kids for All Seasons Kids' Club (some of the other luxury resorts are so small that your kids might be the only ones at the kids' club for most of your stay).

2. Four Seasons Hong Kong

Among urban Four Seasons resorts, it's hard to beat the iconic Four Seasons Hong Kong, which is the Four Seasons flagship in Asia for good reason. Hong Kong is one of the Best Luxury Hotel Cities, thanks to very steep competition from giants in the business: Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, Rosewood, Mandarin Oriental, Shangri-La, The Peninsula–as well as more boutique type properties, such as The Upper House, from Swire Hotels.

Even with all the competition, the Four Seasons Hong Kong, particularly the Executive Club Lounge, shines. It's also why we get nervous if the Four Seasons Hong Kong is the first Four Seasons a client experiences, as many other Four Seasons can't quite live up to the service standards of the Hong Kong property. 3. Four Seasons George V Paris

The Four Seasons George V, Paris remains one of the other top city-center Four Seasons in the world, and is a fantastic base from which to experience the City of Light. The magnificent floral arrangements in the lobby by Jeff Leatham carry through into smaller bouquets in the guest rooms and suites, adding a romantic touch welcomed by the many couples who stay here on honeymoon, anniversary, and birthday trips.

Don't miss a splurge lunch or dinner at 3 Michelin Star Le Cinq Restaurant, and if you have a child, this is one of the few urban Four Seasons with nice activities for kids–for example a pastry lesson, or a glimpse of the hidden doorways and passageways that celebrity guests could use to enter and leave the hotel inconspicuously.

4. Four Seasons Lanai

Lanai is where Bill and Melinda Gates got married, and the island (including the Four Seasons resort) is now owned by Larry Ellison. Ellison invested $75 million or so in renovating the resort, which reopened in 2016, and we consider it the best luxury resort in Hawaii now. It's a 25 min. flight from Honolulu or a ferry ride from Maui, and worth the splurge, especially if you reserve one of the Prime Oceanfront Studio Suites or new Penthouse Suites.

5. Four Seasons Seychelles at Desroches Island

While I don't really recommend the Four Seasons Seychelles on Mahe, I do recommend the Four Seasons Seychelles at Desroches Island, which has worked through some initial opening pains back in 2018 to become a favorite place for R&R after a Singita safari stay, or even on its own for an island getaway.

6. Four Seasons Koh Samui

Thailand hosts several Four Seasons resorts, and certainly clients have greatly enjoyed stays at the Four Seasons Tented Camp in the Golden Triangle and Four Seasons Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. The favorite remains Four Seasons Koh Samui, however, where each villa has its own private pool, built into the terraced hillside. The breakfasts, Thai cuisine, and spa are fantastic here, making for a wonderful couples or family vacation.

Even my clients who generally prefer boutique hotels end up loving the Four Seasons St. Petersburg, which is in a landmark building designed by Auguste Montferrand, the same architect whose life's work was the adjacent St. Isaac's Cathedral. Be sure to reserve at least a Four Seasons Room, if not a Terrace Room, and request it to face St. Isaac's–the view is simply magnificent.
