Chase Sapphire Reserve: New 48 Month Language

Chase Sapphire Reserve-48 Month Churning Restriction

.

Chase Has Added 48 Month Language to the Chase Sapphire Reserve, to Dissuade Churners, per Reddit. You can see the new language by going to the public offer for the 50K Chase Sapphire Reserve and also for the Chase Sapphire Preferred, where it now says (bolding mine):

“This product is available to you if you do not have any Sapphire card and have not received a new cardmember bonus for any Sapphire card in the past 48 months.”

Compare this to the prior 24 month language, which is at time of writing is still present on the Chase Sapphire Reserve referral links (although note that the Chase Sapphire Reserve Referral Program ended earlier this month, so while the links are still currently working, no one is receiving any more referral credit from them).

“This product is available to you if you do not have any Sapphire card and have not received a new cardmember bonus for any Sapphire card in the past 24 months.”

Chase Sapphire Reserve Referral-24 Month Bonus Restriction

This change, in addition to a couple other changes that took effect August 26, 2018 (see Chase Sapphire Reserve Changes: Priority Pass Guest Limit, No Price Protection), the end of Korean SkyPass as an Ultimate Rewards transfer partner (although this affects all Ultimate Rewards cards) and the abrupt end to paying 10,000 Ultimate Rewards points per Chase Sapphire Reserve referral, is part of an effort to stanch losses stemming from the generous benefits of the card, which is our go-to credit card, with an estimated 70% or more of our annual credit card spend.

A documented issue for the Chase Sapphire Reserve, for Chase, is that fewer clients than projected are holding balances, lowering Chase's revenue from the card. Revenue is already squeezed given that all travel and dining earn 2X Ultimate Rewards points, and at this point, many consumers are savvy enough to maximize both their points earning by focusing their spend on the 3X categories, and redemption, by transferring to Ultimate Rewards airline partners to redeem for first class and business class award flights.

So for those who are eligible for the Chase Sapphire Reserve with the 24 month language, but wouldn't be eligible for the bonus with the 48 month language, I encourage you to apply with ourChase Sapphire Reserve link, which still has the 24 month language, even though we earn nothing from the referral at this point.
