Hawaii Luxury Hotels: Reopening Dates and Offers

Hawaii is Reopening on October 15, 2020; visitors with negative coronavirus tests can skip the 14-day quarantine. That's good news for those who have been dismayed to see the state's reopening pushed back from August to September to mid-October. That said, not all Hawaii hotels will reopen as of October 15. Some have set later opening dates to coincide with traditionally busier months of November and December.

1. Four Seasons Lanai: Reopens October 15, 2020

The Four Seasons Lanai is currently our favorite Hawaii luxury resort. Larry Ellison, who owns most of Lanai, invested over $450 million in renovating the resort in 2016, down to the Japanese Toto toilets, making the rooms and suites here, particularly the brand new Penthouse Suites, the loveliest in Hawaii. Lanai is tiny, so this isn't the island for you if you want plenty of dining choices outside the resort, but for those who truly want to get away, it's ideal.

2. Fairmont Kea Lani, Wailea, Maui: Reopens October 15, 2020

The Fairmont Kea Lani tends to be popular with families, especially those with kids who love water slides. It's a big and more mid-market resort, so for those with kids who also want some time at a more upscale property, we recommend following a stay here with one at the Four Seasons Wailea.

3. Fairmont Orchid, Hawaii: Reopens October 15, 2020

The Fairmont Orchid is usually booked by clients who don't quite have the budget for the Four Seasons Hualalai, which we recommend above the Fairmont Orchid. While the Fairmont Orchid does have a better beach, there's only one main pool, which can be frustrating for adults wanting an adults-only pool, away from kids.

4. Ritz-Carlton Kapalua: Reopens November 1, 2020

Some of our clients are loyal Ritz-Carlton Kapalua on Maui guests, as the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua Club Lounge level accommodations are less expensive than at the Four Seasons Wailea. Something to keep in mind is that Kapalua is on the windy side of the island, so the beach here tends to be much better for boogie boarding, and not very calm–for snorkeling, you're better off in Wailea.

5. Andaz Maui at Wailea: Reopens November 1, 2020

The Andaz Maui at Wailea was formerly a Renaissance hotel that has been renovated; bathrooms leave something to be desired, and are more form over function.

6. Four Seasons Maui at Wailea: Reopens November 20, 2020

The Four Seasons Maui at Wailea is our favorite luxury resort on Maui; it was renovated in 2016, and as with all new and renovated Four Seasons hotels, has the new Four Seasons beds with customizable mattress toppers. There's a separate adults-only pool with cabana rental options, and the resort fronts a beach that is good for snorkeling. Don't miss a complimentary canoe paddle session, which should be reserved in advance.

7. Four Seasons Hualalai: Reopens December 1, 2020

The Four Seasons Hualalai will be among the last Hawaii luxury resorts to reopen, focusing on the higher demand in December and holiday season guests. It will be refreshing its rooms and suites, so we would recommend waiting until later in 2021 to visit, and in the meantime staying at the Four Seasons Lanai and/or the Four Seasons Maui at Wailea. Hualalai is special, with its five different swimming pools, including the iconic lava rock Kings Pond, which is like swimming in a tropical aquarium. In addition to the adult pool, there's a Serenity Pool, a free form family pool with shallow wading area for kids, and a lap pool at the spa.
