Zaftigs Boston Restaurant Review

Zaftigs Boston Restaurant Review

.

Zaftigs is a Boston institution, having been opened in 1997 by local restauranteur Bob Shuman and won accolades both in Boston and nationally, as one of the best delis in America. The name is Yiddish for a “pleasingly plump woman”. Shurman has noted that it's “a term of endearment,” and that his grandmother was the inspiration for the picture of the older woman that's become synonymous with Zaftigs.

Zaftigs Location and Hours

Zaftigs is located at 335 Harvard Street in Brookline, near Coolidge Corner. It's about a 15 minute journey from the Copley stop on the Green Line C train, exiting at the Coolidge Corner stop and walking 4 minutes to the restaurant. Zaftigs is open daily 8am-8pm.

Zaftigs Breakfast Menu and Food

Zaftigs serves breakfast all day, which for us, coming from the West Coast and waking up late, was a huge plus. Jewish deli favorites are well represented: latkes, knishes, cheese blintzes, bagels, etc.

Dark roast coffee was strong but not bitter, and bottomless, with complimentary refills.

Our teen's Mediterranean omelette was solid, but nothing to write home about.

The side of bacon could have been a bit crispier, but was still eaten up.

I liked my Combo plate with whitefish salad, cold baked salmon, Nova salmon, a toasted bagel, cream cheese, capers, tomato and cucumber.

One of our favorites was the Banana Stuffed French Toast with date butter and berries; it was so good we ordered it a second time when we went back.

Our other favorite were the cheese blintzes with berries and sour cream:

The meat knish was much smaller than what we're used to from New York City, but had a very generous meat filling and served as a great mid-afternoon snack.

The Verdict

Zaftigs is great for fans of breakfast, brunch, and Jewish delis. We especially enjoyed the Banana-Stuffed French Toast, Blintzes, and the Nova Smoked Salmon. The knish was on the small side, at least compared to what we're used to in NYC, but had plenty of meat for the size.
