Where to Go In March: Best Luxury Resorts

Where to Go in March: Best Luxury Resorts

Spring Break is a great time to get away to a luxury resort; it tends not to be quite as hectic as Christmas and New Year's (with a few exceptions) and if you avoid the days around Easter itself, it can be more reasonably priced than New Year's. While it's best to plan about 11 months out if flying far and wanting to use miles and points for award tickets, some of my recommendations below are relatively close to the U.S. and can still be booked.

1. Cheval Blanc Randheli, Maldives

No question, Cheval Blanc Randheli is pricey, but it's gorgeous, and our favorite Maldives resort to date of the 6 Maldivian luxury resorts we've been to. You wouldn't expect anything less of the luxury resort arm of Louis Vuitton, but it still amazed us even with all the fantastic resorts we've been fortunate enough to have stayed at.

Our villa was spacious, with a divider between the bedroom and living room; an infinity pool that you could swim laps in, with a view of the ocean; a two person shower and separate bath, walk-in closet and dressing area, two toilets, kitchenette with full sized fridge, enough delectable welcome macarons to feed a family twice our size–you get the idea. Don't miss the incredible Michelin quality tasting dinner at Le 1947, or a snorkeling or diving expedition–I was lucky enough to see two octopuses while snorkeling. Tennis buffs and spa lovers will be happy to know that there are dedicated islands with tennis courts and spa, respectively. There's also a complimentary kids' club, Le Carrousel, which our son was loathe to leave, thanks to the fantastic and caring staff.

Randheli, Maldives Weather in March: March is an excellent time to visit the Maldives, because it's after the crazy Christmas and New Year's period, but still squarely during the Maldives' dry season, with few rainy days

  • Full Breakfast daily for up to two in-room guests
  • $150 USD Food & Beverage credit to be utilized during stay in any of the resort's restaurants, bars or for room service, i.e. “Carte Blanche” (not combinable, not valid on room rate, no cash value if not redeemed in full)

2. Four Seasons Costa Rica

Four Seasons Costa Rica will reopen in December 2017, after an extensive renovation, so this is a great time to visit what will be a very fresh-looking property. It's also a resort that offers plenty of choices for couples and families, from beach time and pool time to tennis, golf, cooking classes, a complimentary Kids' Club, and off-property, zip-lining, bird-watching, hiking and horseback riding.

Costa Rica Weather in March: March is a great time to visit the Peninsula Papagayo, where the Four Seasons Costa Rica is located, because it's during the dry season and there tends to be little to no rain and clearer skies. That often changes in April, when there's a greater chance of rain and cloudy skies. Do be prepared for warm temperatures no matter when you travel, with highes in the low-mid 90s and lows in the mid 70s.

Four Seasons Costa Rica Preferred Partner Benefits

  • Daily full American breakfast for two people per bedroom, served through In-Room Dining or in the hotel restaurant (including buffets)
  • For suite bookings, one complimentary round of golf per guest per stay (including club rentals)
  • Upgrade of one category, based on availability at time of check-in (excluding signature suites, villas, and private residences)
  • Complimentary basic Internet in all guest rooms; complimentary premium Internet in all suites
  • Choice of USD100 Spa credit (not applicable to products) or USD100 golf credit

3. The Chedi Andermatt

Andermatt has returned as a ski destination, in large part thanks to The Chedi Andermatt, a destination resort that is the jewel in the crown of Egyptian investor Samih Sawiris' investment in Andermatt, who is also building other hotels in the area. Andermatt has challenging ski runs and often receives fresh powder in March, so it's perfect for the expert skier. But even if you're not a skier, you can enjoy the gorgeous mountain views, architecture by Jean-Michel Gathy (who has also designed for Aman Resorts and Cheval Blanc), and the extensive spa, with its indoor pool, saunas, steam rooms, and Balinese, Thai and Ayurvedic therapies available.

Andermatt Weather in March: This is ski season, so expect highs in the 40s and lows around 30.

Chedi Andermatt Virtuoso Benefits

  • Authentic Swiss Chocolate Platter served with a bottle of Champagne

4. Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman

If you're looking for someplace reachable via a nonstop flight from NYC (4 hours), with warm weather, a beautiful beach and a number of dining options, Grand Cayman is a great choice. Sure, it's more developed than some of the other Caribbean islands, but the beach is beautiful, and the Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman is one of the better Caribbean luxury resorts in terms of service levels, and in terms of activities for families with kids.

Grand Cayman Weather in March: March is a great time to visit Grand Cayman. Typically there's very little rain, 8 hours of sunshine, and highs are in the high 70s.

Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman Virtuoso Benefits

Note that Virtuoso benefits are not combinable with any of the hotel's special promotions, but Ritz-Carlton STARS benefits (without the resort credit) are often combinable.
  • Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
  • Daily Buffet breakfast, for up to two in room guests
  • $100 USD Equivalent Resort or Hotel credit, to be utilized during stay (not combinable, not valid on room rate, no cash value if not redeemed in full)

5. Four Seasons Lanai

For West Coast clients, Hawaii is a natural choice for March and Spring Break travel. I still do recommend Four Seasons Hualalai, but Four Seasons Lanai is a new favorite, thanks to the over $75 million renovation the property underwent in 2015, and the gorgeous rooms and suites. Lanai isn't Maui, and for fans of the renovated resort, that's a good thing. Enjoy snorkeling off the beach, a dip in the new adults only pool, tennis, golf, or horseback riding–or just getting away from it all.

Lanai, Hawaii Weather in March: Expect highs in the high 70s and lows in the low 60s. While it's common to have some rain in March in Lanai and elsewhere in Hawaii (how else would the islands be so green and lush?) March tends to see less rain than November-February.

Four Seasons Lanai Preferred Partner Benefits
  • Daily full American breakfast for two people per bedroom, served through In-Room Dining or in the hotel restaurant (including buffets)
  • Food and beverage credit of USD100
  • Upgrade of one category, based on availability at time of check-in (excluding signature suites, villas, and private residences)
  • Complimentary basic Internet in all guest rooms; complimentary premium Internet in all suites

6. Mandarin Oriental Marrakech

Many clients ask where they can go in Europe in March that's warm. Honestly, I don't recommend Europe in March if you're looking for warm weather; if you want to go skiing, that would be a better idea. But even southern Italy and Spain are not particularly warm yet in March.

Marrakech is warmer, as I describe below, and clients have loved their stays at the Mandarin Oriental Marrakech, one of the newest resorts just outside Marrakech, with expansive suites and villas, some with their own private pool. Another great benefit of the property is that VIP fast track service at Marrakech Airport is included, which is a must, as anyone who has waited in a long line at immigration there can attest to.

Marrakech Weather in March: Consider going to Marrakech if you want warm weather in March, since Marrakech is just a 2 hour flight from Madrid, and highs in March can be in the mid 80s, although note that highs in the 70s and even high 60s are also possible. Also be sure to bring some warm layers for evenings, which can be quite chilly.

Mandarin Oriental Marrakech Fan Club Benefits
  • USD 100 Food & Beverage or Spa Credit, per room per stay
  • Daily full breakfast for two persons
  • Complimentary High Speed Internet Access during stay
  • Personalized welcome amenity and note
  • One category room upgrade, subject to availability at time of check-in
