3/16/22 Update: Vaccinated Americans Can Visit New Zealand from May 2022, 2 months earlier than originally planned, per Prime Minister Jacinda Arden's March 16 press conference. Travelers won't need to self-isolate on arrival, as we wrote in New Zealand ends self-isolation for fully vaccinated arrivals. We've updated our prior post with the new details.
New Zealand will open to fully vaccinated Americans and other visitors from visa waiver countries such as Canada, the UK, most EU countries, Japan, Singapore, etc. from 11:59pm on May 1, 2022, instead of the previous July 2022 reopening date.
Arrivals must be fully vaccinated and have negative results from a pre-departure COVID-19 PCR test or supervised rapid antigen test, but will not be required to isolate upon arrival. On arrival, visitors will receive two rapid antigen tests and and will need to take the first test after arrival and the second antigen test on day 5 or 6.
As we wrote in When Will Australia, Japan and New Zealand Reopen in 2022, New Zealand has been closed to most non-citizen international arrivals for nearly two years, since March 2020, and has had some of the strictest entry restrictions even for returning citizens and permanent residents, including managed isolation and quarantine in specific quarantine hotels.
Where to Stay in New Zealand
Although Auckland has the new Park Hyatt Auckland, which in 2020, most of New Zealand's best luxury accommodation is in the form of small luxury lodges. Typically, the tariff includes both breakfast and a gourmet multi-course dinner, daily. Our top recommendations are The Farm at Cape Kidnappers in Hawke's Bay, Matakauri Lodge in Queenstown, Otahuna in the Christchurch area, and Kauri Cliffs in the Bay of Islands.
