Best Uses of British Airways and Iberia Avios

Some of our favorite Avios business class awards are in Iberia Business Class to and from Madrid, as this avoids the high fuel surcharges and UK APD fees of British Airways Business Class awards. For example, Iberia Business Class from Mexico City MEX to Madrid MAD, a nearly 11 hour flight, is 74,000 British Airways Avios (57,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points with the 30% transfer bonus) + $183. Similarly, fly Los Angeles LAX to Madrid MAD, also a nearly 11 hour flight, for 74,000 Avios (57,000 AMEX Membership Rewards points) + $137. Depending on dates, LAX-MAD-LAX in Iberia Business Class is ~$5800, so that's close to 5 cents per AMEX point in value, much better than any non-airline partner uses of AMEX Membership Rewards points.

A shorter flight, such as the 7 hour Iberia Business Class flight from Boston BOS to Madrid MAD is 59,000 Avios (46,000 AMEX points with the 30% transfer bonus) + $126. Again, a great use of AMEX points at less than 50K points each way for business class.

Other decent uses are short haul flights in Asia, such JAL Business Class or Cathay Pacific Business Class. Cathay Pacific Business Class from Hong Kong HKG to Ho Chi Minh City SGN is 33,000 Avios (26K AMEX points) + 98 for the 2 hours, 45 min. flight, or fly to Bali DPS for 51,500 Avios (40K AMEX points), a 5 hour flight.

JAL Business Class Tokyo HND to Seoul GMP, a 2.5 hour flight, is 29,500 Avios (23K AMEX points) + $88, or fly JAL First Class for 68,000 Avios (53K AMEX points) + $263 for the 6.5 hour flight.
