This Four Seasons Napa Valley Review is from our stay soon after the resort's opening in Fall 2021. This new Four Seasons has its own winery, Elusa Winery, located right at the resort, the first Four Seasons in the world to have an on-site winery. Read on to view our photos and video of a Vineyard Room, resort pool and adult pool, Spa Talisa, and more.

Four Seasons Napa Valley Location and Check-in

Four Seasons Napa Valley is located in Calistoga at 400 Silverado Trail, about a 2 hour drive from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and about a 40 minute drive from Sonoma County Airport (STS) which has nonstop flights from DEN (from 2/11/22), LAX, PDX, PHX, SAN, SEA, SFO and SNA.

We arrived just before 12noon, and were fortunate to be able to check-in early; normal check-in time is 4pm. In the event your room or suite isn't ready when you arrive, you can enjoy the resort's pools, jacuzzis, and other amenities while the front desk stores your luggage. Another good option is to reserve a spa treatment on your arrival day.

Four Seasons Napa Valley Rooms

The resort has 68 rooms and 17 suites, plus the 3 bedroom Estate Villa. All the rooms are 480-530 square feet (45-50 square meters), with either one king bed or two double beds. King bedded rooms accommodate a maximum of two adults and an infant in a crib, while double bedded rooms can accommodate up to two adults and a child.

A lovely feature is that all rooms and suites have their own gas fireplace, great for chilly wine country nights.

Our Vineyard Room's terrace (all rooms and suites have a private furnished terrace) overlooked the vineyards; occasionally we'd see people bicycling by, a popular activity in wine country.

We enjoyed the welcome amenity of bottled water and creatively arranged macarons.

The macarons were great with coffee from the Nespresso machine in the room. I liked that there was also a hot water kettle, so that we didn't have to bother Housekeeping for a kettle when making tea that evening.

As always, we slept superbly on the comfortable Four Seasons bed, which is by far our favorite hotel bed.

The bathroom, which is separated from the entranceway by a sliding wooden door, has double sinks, a separate toilet, and a wet room with a walk-in shower and deep soaking tub. Bath products are by Australian brand Sodashi, which uses natural botanical extracts.

For families or friends traveling together, the 3BR Estate Villa is the one to reserve. It features an open plan, indoor-outdoor living and dining area in addition to its three bedrooms, each with its own full bathroom, plus a guest half bathroom. It also boasts its own private pool with eight pool loungers.

Elusa Winery

Elusa Winery is located right on property at the Four Seasons Napa Valley, and its opening predates the resort's. The winery has been helmed by top winemaker Thomas Rivers Brown since 2012; Brown is known for being the first American winemaker to earn a 100 point score from Wine Spectator; he's also earned multiple 100 point scores from Robert Parker for his wines. Elusa Winery's Tasting Room only opened to visitors in September 2021; the winery's wines aren't available online, only through membership and by visiting the winery.

Elusa's vineyard, which is planted among the resort's residences, was replanted in 2018 and in 2020 and is 4.7 acres, devoted entirely to Cabernet Sauvignon. Elusa wines showcase Calistoga, including select single vineyard vintages. The winemaking team takes a minimalist approach, and their high standards and careful blending are evident even in the barrel tasting: we were shocked how good the wine tasted right from the barrel, let alone in the 2012 Nehlike Bordeaux Blend and 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon we tasted.

Four Seasons Napa Valley Swimming Pools

As is so crucial at luxury resorts that cater to both couples and families, there are two pools, with the main resort pool open to all, and a separate adult only pool for guests 16 and older. There's a jacuzzi by the resort pool, and another by the adult pool.

Spa Talisa

Spa Talisa, which is near the resort reception, offers a full range of massage, facial, and body treatments, including a Calistoga mud experience, which has its own sunning area just off of the outdoor communal relaxation area, which has an outdoor whirlpool and loungers with a view of the vineyards. There are eight spa treatment rooms, and the men's and women's changing rooms each open into a separate outdoor steam area.

The Verdict

Until now, Napa Valley has lacked a true luxury resort that welcomes both couples and families. Four Seasons Napa Valley fills this void with wholly new, beautifully appointed rooms and suites and true luxury service, which can be inconsistent at other wine country resorts.

A huge plus is the on-site Elusa Winery, whose wines are stellar. We've never been so impressed by a barrel tasting, and the wines are among the most elegant and balanced we've tasted.

All the savory options we tried from Truss Restaurant were fantastic, especially the superb maple custard black truffle amuse bouche, the homemade potato chips with green onion dip and caviar, the glazed pork ribs and the Truss Caviar Tartine. The one area we feel could be improved are some of the sweeter breakfast selections, such as the granola with yogurt, waffles, and coffee cake, where we'd like to see a more generous hand with the berries, apple and maple custard topping, and candied chestnut butter, respectively, or at least the option for a “moreish” approach in line with, say, Tartine Bakery and Tartine Manufactory in San Francisco.
