How to Expedite Global Entry Renewal After Expiration

Can You Expedite Global Entry Renewal After It Expires? TravelSort reader Jeremy writes: “I should have kept track of my Global Entry expiration but I didn't. I only realized that it had expired when it didn't work after my most recent international trip. I applied for renewal, but now I'm worried because people are reporting months of delays. Is there some way to expedite a renewal?”

Global Entry Renewal After Expiration

As we've written in How Long to Renew Global Entry in 2024, current Global Entry renewals can take over one year; there's a 15 month backlog for renewals. While some renewing members are fortunate and have their renewal processed within days, my own renewal took just over one year after submitting it in March 2023. If you renewed close to one year ago and your renewal still hasn't come through, I do recommend emailing evus@cbp.dhs.gov. You'll likely get a form reply noting that no expediting is possible, as I did; nevertheless, just a couple days after I received the form reply, my renewal was approved.

Unfortunately, if your Global Entry has already expired, you won't have access to TSA PreCheck or to Global Entry privileges until your renewal has been processed, so that's the bad news for this reader. The good news is that there are other things that may help fill the gap in the meantime: CLEAR and Mobile Passport Entry.

CLEAR to Expedite Clearing Security

Without Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, there can be long lines waiting for TSA security screening. CLEAR, a private company, operates biometric scanning at kiosks via a dedicated CLEAR line at the following airports, although CLEAR customers will need to go through regular security screening (taking off shoes, removing laptop from bag). Reports are that recently, CLEAR lines are often longer than TSA PreCheck, likely because of the huge influx of members who enjoy complimentary access via their AMEX Platinum/AMEX Business Platinum, similar to the over-crowding of AMEX Centurion Lounges. But there are occasions when CLEAR queues are similar or even shorter than TSA PreCheck lines.

CLEAR offers a free 2 month trial (regular price is $189 per year), and credit cards such as the AMEX Platinum/Business Platinum and AMEX Green Card offer a $189 statement credit, making the card free for members; other cards such as the United MileagePlus Explorer and various Delta SkyMiles credit cards provide an $80 statement credit, bringing the cost down to $109 per year. United Premier 1K and Global Services members and top-tier Delta frequent flyer elites receive complimentary CLEAR membership, and general members of United MileagePlus and Delta SkyMiles pay $119 per year, while other non top-tier Delta and United elites pay $109 per year. Here are the airports that offer CLEAR:

Mobile Passport Control to Expedite Reentry to U.S.

Until Global Entry is approved, it isn't possible to use Global Entry kiosks when returning to the U.S. from an international destination. But U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) offers a free Mobile Passport Control app that can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and Google Play, for travelers to use at the following U.S. airports and Preclearance locations:

  • Abu Dhabi AUH
  • Atlanta ATL
  • Aruba AUA
  • Bermuda BDA
  • Baltimore BWI
  • Boston BOS
  • Calgary YYC
  • Charlotte CLT

.

Bottom Line: If you have Global Entry and want to keep its benefits, be sure to apply for renewal before it expires. If you do, you'll continue to have TSA PreCheck and be able to use Global Entry kiosks for up to 24 months after your expiration date. If you're in the same situation as this reader and apply for renewal after your Global Entry expires, consider getting CLEAR to bypass security lines (although you'll still have to remove shoes, etc. during TSA screening) and use Mobile Passport Control to reduce your wait time when returning to the U.S.
