Save on 5X Gift Cards at Staples with Visa Savings Edge

Save extra on 5X gift cards at Staples with Visa SavingsEdge with 1% bonus cash back on $200 or more transactions via Dan. We usually end up buying at least $200 in gift cards with our Ink Bold or Ink Plus on our trips to Staples, primarily in order to earn 5X on all Amazon spend and 5X on all Whole Foods spend, but also occasionally on Visa gift cards, for gifts. And now is a good time to both meet minimum spend on a new Ink Bold Visa (no longer available to apply for, see Bye Bye Ink Bold) and stock up on 5X gift cards, since the Visa SavingsEdge offer expires in a few days.

Here are the details:

  • Offer valid until 12/31/14
  • Valid on qualifying purchases of $200 or more made in the U.S. at Staples retail locations or online at staples.com
  • Only valid on qualifying purchases made with a valid enrolled Visa Business card
  • 1% discount provided as a statement credit on a future account statement

3. Buy at Least $200 Worth of Gift Cards at Staples

As mentioned above, my top picks are Amazon and Whole Foods gift cards, but if there are any other stores you shop regularly at, those are good bets as well. None of the merchant gift cards charge a fee.

Buy $200 or More at Staples to Qualify for Visa SavingsEdge

If you buy a $200 Visa gift card, you do pay $6.95, although with the 1% cash back statement credit, that equates to $204.88. By using your Ink Plus or old Ink Bold card, you're earning 1034 Ultimate Rewards points for the cost of $4.88, which is like buying points at $0.0047, less than half a cent each: a much better deal than you'll ever find when frequent flyer programs offer to sell you miles, even with whatever bonus they offer you.

Of course, keep in mind Ultimate Rewards' best transfer partner is Singapore KrisFlyer, given that Ultimate Rewards points can't transfer to Korean SkyPass currently (hopefully Skypass will return as an Ultimate Rewards partner: secure message Chase to tell them you want Skypass back!), and that United MileagePlus isn't as good a transfer partner as it used to be, after the United Award Chart Devaluation earlier this year that increased some first class and business class international awards on Star Alliance partners by up to 86%.
