2015 Chase Freedom Calendar 5X Categories: Better Than Last Year

2015 Chase Freedom Calendar 5X Categories: Better Than Last Year

The 2015 Chase Freedom Calendar 5X Categories have been announced (well, at least some of them) and they're better than last year–slightly. I am very happy to see grocery stores return as a Q1 category after a 2 year hiatus, since grocery stores weren't a category for either 2014 or 2013. The major 5X categories for Q2, Q3 and Q4 2015 have also been announced, but Chase has yet to fill in some blanks. I don't, however, expect to see anything truly interesting such as airlines or hotels be one of the 5X categories–it will most likely be trivial categories such as theme parks, more gas station 5X, or certain named department stores where Chase is still working out the details, although I have no inside information.

Here are the Chase Freedom 2015 5X bonus categories:

Q1 2015 (January 1 to March 31, 2015)

  • Grocery Stores
  • Movie Theaters
  • Starbucks Stores
My Take: Finally! I was wondering if grocery stores would ever return as a 5X category. Sure, you can get 5X on all Whole Foods spend with your Ink Plus, but I like 5X on all Trader Joes spend even better. If you barely buy groceries, find a grocery store where you can buy gift cards with a credit card, and buy those for later use.

Q2 2015 (April 1 to June 30, 2015)

  • Restaurants
  • TBD

My Take: This is the 5X quarter I most look forward to, not because we'll eat out so much during Q2 itself, but because between my Chase Freedom and my husband's Chase Freedom, we'll be able to get 5X on most of our dining spend throughout the year. My husband and I will each max out our 5X bonus by buying restaurant gift cards. Interested in some restaurant recommendations? Check out my Restaurant Reviews (just keep in mind you don't want to use the Chase Freedom for any international dining spend, due to the foreign transaction fee).

Q3 2015 (July 1 to September 30, 2015)

  • Gas Stations
  • TBD
My Take: Useless, to me personally living in NYC without a car. I know that I could potentially hunt down a gas station that takes credit cards for gift cards, although I suspect they're few and far between in NYC, and it's just not worth the time to me. No more useful to me. I don't expect to put anything on my Chase Freedom this quarter, unless that TBD turns into something really useful.

Q4 2015 (October 1 to December 31, 2015)

  • Amazon.com
  • TBD
My Take: Another ho hum quarter. I already earn 5X on all Amazon spend via my Ink Plus and Amazon gift cards from office supply stores, so no reason to take out my Chase Freedom this quarter either. Yes, you could argue that there's that 10% end of year bonus on all points, so effectively 5.5%, but frankly I love the convenience of just loading my Amazon account with $100 Amazon gift cards, rather than switching over to the Chase Freedom for a few extra points.

Bottom Line: Not bad, not bad–we'll max out our Chase Freedom for Q1 and Q2, and either not pull it out at all for Q3 and Q4 or perhaps Chase will surprise us with a useful 5X category–we'll see. 5X for airlines and hotels would be nice, but I'm not holding my breath.

What do you think of the Chase Freedom 2015 Calendar and 5X categories?
