Which Travel Destinations are the Most Vaccinated? It's abundantly clear how crucial COVID-19 vaccinations are, when it comes to allowing normal life and travel to continue, without excessive hospitalization and death.
It's revealing to compare Denmark and Israel, for example. While Israel got a head start on vaccinations, at time of writing it's only fully vaccinated about 60% of its population, vs. 70% in Denmark. That additional 10 percentage points of vaccination has resulted in significantly lower test positivity in Denmark: just 1.5%, compared to 5.8% in Israel, and a much higher infection rate in Israel: 1740 per 100K in Israel vs. 489 per 100K over the past month. Singapore, which has managed to fully vaccinate 76% of its population, the test positivity rate is just 0.1%, and COVID-19 infections have been 43 per 100K people over the past month, less than 9% those in Denmark, and just 2% of those in Israel. Singapore, while facing the challenges of new case clusters, is preparing to pivot away from the “Covid-zero” strategy it originally espoused, and which New Zealand is still clinging to, and preparing to live with COVID-19, which is expected to become endemic worldwide. With 76% of the population fully inoculated, it's nearing the 80% threshold needed for further easing of COVID-19 restrictions.
Sadly, the U.S. as a whole has only fully inoculated 52% of its population, so we are still behind Israel, and well behind Canada, Denmark, Singapore, and a number of other countries.
Canada reopened to fully vaccinated Americans August 9, 2021. Hawaii reopened July 8, 2021 to fully vaccinated visitors, allowing them to visit Hawaii without pre-travel COVID-19 testing, although more recently, Governor Ige asked visitors NOT to visit Hawaii right now, in the face of a Covid surge. NYC and San Francisco have vaccine mandates for indoor dining and entertainment.
That said, with the highly transmissible Delta variant, some epidemiologists believe that closer to 90 percent of a population will need to be vaccinated in order to curb outbreaks. Here are the current most vaccinated travel destinations:
- Midtown Manhattan, NYC: 85-100% of adults are fully vaccinated. See NYC vaccinations by zip code.
- San Francisco: 86% of eligible residents have received at least one dose; 79% of all eligible San Franciscans are fully vaccinated, and 72% of all residents (all ages) fully vaccinated. San Francisco is the first major U.S. city thought to have reached herd immunity. In some parts of the city, over 90% of the population is fully vaccinated.
