Spain Reopening to the Vaccinated: What to Know, Where to Stay

Spain is Reopening June 7, 2021 to Fully Vaccinated Travelers from all over the world. Even earlier, starting May 24, 2021, Spain will open to fully vaccinated British travelers and those from several other low-risk non-EU countries who won't be required to take a COVID-19 PCR test. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez made the announcement on Friday at Madrid's FITUR international tourism trade fair.

What Vaccination and/or Testing is Required?

In order to visit, U.S. visitors will need to be fully vaccinated with a vaccine approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), meaning at least 14 days past the final dose:

Pfizer
Moderna
AstraZeneca
Johnson & Johnson
Sinopharm

Those who are fully vaccinated will need to provide their vaccine card as proof of vaccination. Unvaccinated minor children of parents who have been fully vaccinated will be able to enter with a negative result from a COVID-19 PCR test taken within the 72 hours prior to arrival in Spain.

Spain COVID-19 Situation

Spain's count of new daily COVID-19 cases has declined markedly since its highs in late January. On May 20, there were 5733 new cases, and the daily 7-day average was 4744, or about 10 per 100K population. That's similar to Indiana, which is better than Florida, Michigan and Colorado, but not as low as 35 other U.S. states, such as New York, Arizona, Texas, Hawaii, California, etc.

To date Spain has administered at least one vaccine dose to ~35% of its population, ahead of Italy and Greece, although well behind Iceland, the US and the UK.
