Four Seasons Charleston Wins Approval to Proceed

The Four Seasons Charleston, announced in 2023, has received approval from Charleston's Board of Architectural Review to go forward. It still needs some additional approvals and permits before there's a demolition date of the existing structure and timeline to break ground. Upon completion, it will be the first Four Seasons in South Carolina and the only major luxury hotel brand in Charleston, now that The Charleston Place is no longer part of Belmond.

The hotel will be located at 155 Meeting Street, a mere two minute walk from The Charleston Place Hotel in downtown Charleston, and walking distance to local sights such as Charleston City Market, the Joe Riley Waterfront Park, The Battery, The Charleston Museum, and others. The 1.9 acre location currently houses a budget hotel, which will be razed to make room for the new build hotel. There will be 150 rooms and suites, which is about one third the number of The Charleston Place and on par with The Dewberry Charleston, another Virtuoso hotel. While the hotel will be the focal point of the project, there will also be about 40 private residences offered to buyers.

A significant point of contention was the hotel architect's request to add a recessed eighth floor, as a rooftop terrace, with a conservatory and rooftop swimming pool. Local preservation groups opposed this feature, but ultimately Charleston's Board of Architectural Review approved it.
