New Chase Freedom Card Members Can Earn 9X on Groceries, Amazon Spend and More in Q1 2022, thanks to a lucrative welcome bonus bonus combined with the Chase Freedom Q1 2022 5X grocery bonus.
Both the Chase Freedom Flex and Chase Freedom Unlimited are currently offering the following welcome bonus to new card members:
- Earn 20,000 points after spending $500 on purchases within the first three months
- Earn 5x points on grocery store spend on up to $12,000 of purchases in the first year of card membership
While the 20K bonus points signup offer is typical for the Chase Freedom card, the 5X points on grocery store spend up to $12K is not. The Chase Freedom Flex offers 5X on grocery spend up to $1500 in Q1 2022, so new Chase Freedom Flex card members can earn 9X on up to $1500 grocery spend in Q1 2022, then continue to earn 5X on $10,500 additional grocery spend throughout the first year of card membership.
If you don't spend $500 per month ($1500 in January-March 2022) on groceries, not to worry: you could easily purchase gift cards at grocery stores that sell them, either for that grocery store or for other merchants, to use later in the year. For example, our local Whole Foods sells Amazon and other gift cards in addition to Whole Foods gift cards.
The Chase Freedom with its quarterly rotating 5X categories, along with the AMEX Blue Business Plus, are our two favorite no annual fee credit cards, with complementary spend strategies. We rarely put anything on our Chase Freedom cards unless it's in one of the 5X bonus spend categories. Thanks to our Chase Sapphire Preferred, 5X points earned with the Chase Freedom can be transferred to Chase Ultimate Rewards airline partners such as United MileagePlus, Singapore KrisFlyer, British Airways Executive Club, etc. By contrast, anything that doesn't otherwise earn us a category spend bonus goes on the AMEX Blue Business Plus, which earns 2X Membership Rewards on all spend.
