The Chase Freedom 5X Categories for Q1 2019 are Gas Stations, Drugstores and Tolls, per this Business Wire article. Frankly, I'm disappointed by these 5X categories, although for commuters gas stations and tolls appear to be good categories.
We only used our Chase Freedom in the first half of 2018, maxing out Q1 2018 with Apple Pay and Q2 with grocery stores, buying Trader Joe's gift cards that we're continuing to use. Q3's categories of Gas Stations, Lyft and Walgreens were useless to us, living in NYC, and we didn't bother activating any of our Chase Freedom cards for the Q4 2018 5X categories of Chase Pay, Wholesale Clubs and Department Stores, as we have no spend in these categories either.
While we can certainly use our Chase Freedom cards to purchase gift cards at drugstores, we're already able to earn 5X on these gift cards when we purchase them at Staples using our Ink Cash or Ink Plus.
I wish Chase would bring back 5X categories such as restaurants and airlines/hotels.
Keep in mind that in order to transfer the points you earn on the Chase Freedom out to Ultimate Rewards partners such as Singapore Krisflyer, United MileagePlus, British Airways Executive Club, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, Hyatt, etc., you'll need to have an Ultimate Rewards-linked card such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Preferred or Ink Business Preferred.
What are your thoughts on the Chase Freedom Q1 2019 5X categories?
