AMEX Taste offers complimentary appetizers or a bottle of wine or food discount at select restaurants worldwide. It's not a well publicized benefit (a reader alerted me to it today) perhaps because so few restaurants participate, but it's worth checking if a restaurant you'd like to go to participates. Here are the details, along with some of the better participating restaurants in NYC.

There are only 34 participating AMEX Taste restaurants in NYC, and several of them are super casual, such as Al Horno Lean Mexican Kitchen. Here are some of the higher end and decently reviewed restaurants:

How Do I Obtain the AMEX Taste Benefit for a Restaurant?
For an AMEX Taste participating restaurant, you need to advise the restaurant before ordering. In case your server isn't familiar with the benefit, I recommend having the restaurant's AMEX Taste page handy on your mobile device or bringing a print out with you.
What are the General Requirements?
AMEX Taste benefits are available for lunch or dinner, when the reservation is made in the name of an AMEX card member and paid for with an AMEX card. The benefits cannot be combined with any other offer or promotion and a restaurant may be limited in dates/tables for the offer.
What Are the Requirements for the Complimentary Appetizer Benefit?
The complimentary appetizer benefit requires ordering a main course and dessert per person. The restaurant may limit the selection of appetizers that are eligible to be complimentary.
What are the Requirements for the Complimentary Bottle of Wine Benefit?
Each person at the table must order a main course, to be eligible for the complimentary bottle of wine. The bottle of wine is selected by the restaurant and must be consumed at the restaurant.
What if there are Problems Receiving the AMEX Taste Benefits?
If you can't resolve the issue with the restaurant directly, call AMEX using the number on the back of your card.
