The Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon renovated its suites and most rooms in 2021, restoring its fifties-style glamour (the original Hotel Ritz opened in 1959) while updating it with modern lighting and technology.

Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon Location and Arrival

The hotel is located at Rua Rodrigo da Fonseca, 88 in the heart of modern Lisbon's Marques de Pombal neighborhood. While we've had clients that prefer to stay nearer to the lively Bairro Alto neighborhood, the downside of staying too close to this area is that it can be rather noisy. I found it easy to walk the 20-25 minutes from the Four Seasons to the Bairro Alto for dinner, and the beauty of staying at the Four Seasons is that it's in a quieter, more residential area by the Parque Eduardo VII, making for a peaceful night's sleep.

When we arrived in the morning, there was no wait to check-in, and our room was ready early, which we appreciated.

Premier Park View Room

We recommend reserving a Park View Room, as these are a bit larger, at 527 sq. ft. (49 sq. m.) than City View Rooms, which average 452 sq. ft. (42 sq. m.), in addition of course to having lovely views of the Eduardo VII Park. All rooms come with either one king bed or two twin beds, and because a rollaway isn't possible in these rooms, they accommodate a maximum of two adults and a baby (3 years and younger) in a crib.

Bathrooms feature double sinks, a soaking tub, rain shower, and separate toilet chamber, and come with L'Occitane bath products.

I especially appreciated thoughtful touches such as the L'Occitane makeup remover towelette.

A true highlight is the private balcony with a view of the park, which featured brilliant fall colors during my November stay.

While there weren't welcome amenities in the room when I arrived early, they were discreetly brought during turndown service, when I was out at dinner. In addition to fresh fruit there was a lovely bottle of Port wine to go with fantastic pasteis de nata custard tarts. I had a chance to sample other ones in Lisbon during my short stay, but these ones at the Four Seasons were the best.

Breakfast at Varanda Restaurant

If you like to eat breakfast like a king, you're in luck: the buffet breakfast at the hotel's Varanda Restaurant, served from 7-10:30am, was one of the best I've had in southern Europe, artfully arranged under stunning and festive anthurium floral bouquets. I especially liked that the fresh fruit included raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and strawberries, the excellent yogurts, various cheeses, and smoked salmon.

I was also very happy with my omelet (see it in the above video), which was fluffy, had exactly the vegetables and cheese I requested, and was even adorned with edible flowers–one of the prettiest presentations I've seen in recent memory.

Rooftop Fitness Center and Running Track, Swimming Pools

If a workout at the gym is a must as part of your travel routine, stay at the Four Seasons Lisbon. The fitness center is on the rooftop, and the treadmills as well as the outdoor running track feature a panoramic view of the city and harbor.

If you prefer to swim, there's an indoor lap pool by the spa, and in warmer months, the outdoor pool and pool bar is a great place to unwind.

The Verdict

With the hotel's recent renovation, the Four Seasons Lisbon has become our top pick in Lisbon. It's an easy walk to the Bairro Alto, where we ventured out for dinner, and it's wonderful to have a quiet, ultra-comfortable room to return to sleep in, not to mention the excellent fitness center, pool, and spa facilities. I was also very impressed with the hotel's breakfast buffet and the polished service at Varanda, as well as the delectable custard tarts presented as part of the welcome amenities during turndown service.
