My 100K Chase Sapphire Reserve bonus has posted, helping replenish our Ultimate Rewards points balance after transferring some points earlier this year to Singapore KrisFlyer for 2017 travel.
One of the things I like about Chase Ultimate Rewards is how easy it is to see purchases that earn category bonus points, vs. those that don't. We know that the Chase Sapphire Reserve earns 3X on travel and dining, but it's good to get verification of the exact travel categories that earn 3X.
Here are examples of Travel and Dining spend that earned 3X:
Airfare, Including Taxes on Award Tickets
I had several airfare purchases, including Jetstar Pacific, Air France, and Alaska Air award taxes: all of them earned 3X.
Hotels
Likewise, I had several hotel purchases, including a boutique hotel in France for a client, The Reverie Saigon, Amanoi, and a Four Seasons property, and all of these earned 3X as well.
Trains, Including Commuter Trains
My train purchases included a French TGV trip booked online at the SNCF site and BART in the San Francisco Bay Area, and these too earned 3X.
Taxis
I took taxis both in New York and Washington, DC, and these earned 3X as well.
Subway
I put additional value on my New York MTA subway card, and these purchases also earned 3X
Stand Alone Restaurants
I dined at several stand alone restaurants, such as Tsushima and Black Barn in NYC and Yan Toh Heen in Hong Kong, and all earned 3X.
Fast Food Dining Attached to the Air and Space Museum
We don't normally eat at fast food restaurants, but during a quick trip to DC and visit to the Air and Space Museum, the only museum option was McDonald's and Boston Market. Our salad and pizza purchase earned 3x.
Cafes, Including Bakery Cafes
Visits to Brooklyn Roasting Company and Maison Kayser in NYC and Tartine in San Francisco all earned 3X.
What Didn't Earn 3X
The only purchase I made that I thought might possibly earn 3X but didn't was a purchase at Pierre Herme in Hong Kong, That said, it makes sense it didn't earn 3X as it wasn't a bakery cafe, but simply a small shop selling macarons and chocolates, there was no place to sit and dine.
