Conrad Maldives Superior Water Villa Location and Selection

When I made our 2 night reservation at the Conrad Maldives I knew we'd want to try out a Water Villa. You'll need to pay if you want a guaranteed upgrade; in the low season this can be in the $200-$300 range from the Beach Villa to a regular Water Villa, and in the high season, which we were in, it was a $392 + tax and service charge.

Given all the problems we had with our Beach Villa, we were relieved to be spending our second night at a Water Villa, and thanks to it being a special occasion for us they also upgraded us one category further, to Superior Water Villa #334.

There are just 12 Superior Water Villas located on Rangali Island, arranged in three clusters of four villas. They are fairly close together, so while you may not have a choice given how few there are to begin with, I would try to request 334, which we were in, or 338, since these are at the end of their respective groups of 4. You'll only have a neighbor to your left, and you'll have a more expansive view.

Each Sunrise Water Villa is 818 square feet, which is actually a bit smaller than the Water Villa, with the key differentiator being the jetted whirlpool tub on th sun deck and a slightly different layout of the bathroom, with separate positions for the his and her sinks.

Here's the view that greets you upon entering the Superior Water Villa:

We ventured out to the sun deck right away to see the jacuzzi and take in the ocean view.

We saw some fish in the morning, and I even spotted a good sized reef shark, although didn't manage a photo.

It was great to have a more normal bathtub inside, rather than the huge square outdoor tub of the Beach Villa. And in general I was relieved to have a complete air-conditioned bathroom indoors, which the Beach Villa lacks.

The King size bed, however, was just as hard and uncomfortable as the one in the Beach Villa. This honestly is the worst bed we've had of all 5 Maldives resorts, and for that reason alone I doubt we'll ever be back. Our son slept fine in his extra bed, but we didn't.

The Maldives is so warm that you'll likely only use the whirlpool jacuzzi at night. It had several settings, and one of them turned on colored lights, which the munchkin of course loved. It looks a fairly normal blue in the photo, but it changed to red and purple as well.

The Verdict

We definitely preferred the Superior Water Villa to the poorly designed Beach Villa, and in my view an upgrade to some kind of Water Villa is a must at the Conrad Maldives. I wouldn't stay there with very young kids who don't know how to swim or who you can't trust to be careful, but for older kids, it's possible to stay in them by signing a waiver, even though the resort description says children under 12 are not allowed. The sun deck provides a great view, and the jacuzzi tub of the Superior Water Villa is a nice plus at night. But the Conrad Maldives really should upgrade their beds, and given how spread out the resort is, bikes should be provided as well, as they are at Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru and Soneva Fushi.

Disclosure: We reserved the Conrad Maldives Rangali using 2 complimentary weekend nights from my husband's Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve card. We paid $392 + tax and service to upgrade our second night to a Water Villa, and were further upgraded to a Superior Water Villa. The views expressed in this post are my own.
