United Airlines Will Launch a Nonstop Boston to London Heathrow LHR Route later in 2021, in a move that appears to respond to JetBlue's new Boston to London route, which will feature the new JetBlue Mint Suite and JetBlue Mint Studio. United's announcement comes on the heels of United's new nonstop flights to Hawaii from NYC, Chicago, and Orange County.
While United hasn't yet set a launch date, Patrick Quayle, United's vice president of International Network and Alliances, commented that “We will continue to monitor the demand recovery and travel restrictions as we finalize a start date for this service later in 2021.”
United will operate the route with a Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, providing 46 United Polaris Business Class seats in a 1-1-1 configuration and 22 United Premium Plus seats in a 2-2-2 configuration. Among the Polaris seats, we recommend window seats 3A, 3L, 5A, 5L, 9A, 9L and 11A, 11L. These are open seats, without the closing suite door found in the new JetBlue Mint Suites or Mint Studios. Here's the route schedule:
- Depart Boston 10pm, Arrive London LHR 9:35am the next day
- Depart London LHR 5pm, Arrive Boston 7:30pm
Prior to 9/11, United used to operate a Boston to London nonstop. The post-pandemic world will see significantly reduced corporate travel, however, and with JetBlue's entrance, a bruising fare war could limit the upside of United's new route, especially since American Airlines, British Airways, Delta, and Virgin Atlantic also operate nonstop flights between London and Boston.
