The Thompson Madrid opened in 2022, the first Thompson hotel in Spain, and the most luxurious of Hyatt's hotels in Madrid.
.
Thompson Madrid Location and Check-In
The Thompson Madrid is located at Plaza del Carmen, about a 25-30 minute drive from Madrid Airport (MAD), a 7 minute walk to Plaza Mayor, 15-20 minute walk to the Prado Museum, and a 20 minute walk to El Retiro Park.
A nice touch when I arrived was a refreshing towel. For a moment I wasn't sure what was being presented to me, then I realized it was a dry towel that needed to be placed in water to expand:
.
The lobby offers comfortable seating, and is next to a bar, colorful with the backdrop of bottles with spirits and liqueurs.
.
City View King Room
My City View Room was on the 3rd floor. City View Rooms are 258-365 sq. ft., and price-wise are a slightly higher category than King Deluxe Rooms, but below King Terrace Rooms, which are on a higher floors. While nicely appointed, my City View room had a terrible view of a construction lot, so I'd definitely recommend avoiding this category while there's still construction going on.
.
I also didn't care for the non-enclosed wardrobe area, which is unsightly and cheap-looking; it reminded me of the setup at the Kimpton Vividora Barcelona. I also didn't like that there's no real work desk.
.
The rest of the room was fine, with good blackout curtains and convenient reading lights by the bed, although I found the mattress too firm for comfort.
.
The bathroom has just one sink, not ideal when traveling with a partner, but the rain shower was tall and had good water pressure. Bath products are by Brooklyn-based D.S. & Durga.
.
There's complimentary Nespresso coffee and Harney & Sons tea, but mini bar items are chargeable. I liked that there was already a hot water kettle, so that I didn't have to request one.
.
Rooftop
Since I was there in late fall, the rooftop wasn't open, but guests staying in summer months will have access to a small but lovely rooftop pool and al fresco dining.

Breakfast at The Omar
The Omar serves breakfast from 8-11 am daily, which is complimentary for Hyatt Prive guests. The breakfast starts with a generous spread of cold cuts, toast with fresh tomatoes, garlic, herbs and olive oil to make your own Pan con Tomate, fresh fruit, and yogurt.
.
There's also the option to order an egg or other hot dish from the menu:
.
I tried the Moroccan flatbread with smoked salmon; the flatbread was nothing to write home about, but the smoked salmon was delicious.
.
But the highlight were the pastries. The berry custard danish was superb, and the team would have been happy to bring any of the other pastries if I'd had room, which I didn't.

The Verdict
The Thompson Madrid is a good modern addition to Madrid's hotel scene. I wasn't thrilled with aspects of my room, which had an unsightly view of construction, was rather dark, and had a too firm mattress, but it was perfectly fine for an overnight stay. Unquestionably the highlight was breakfast at The Omar, particularly the pastries.
