Thailand is Planning to Reopen to International Tourists October 1, 2020, starting with Phuket. The reopening will initially only be for long-stay tourists, who plan to stay at least 30 days or longer, and the first 14 days will be in coronavirus quarantine in their hotel or resort. Visitors may have to wear GPS tracking devices, to ensure compliance with the quarantine.
After two negative COVID-19 test results and 14 days in quarantine, visitors will be able to travel around the rest of Phuket for the remainder of their stay. Another week on the island and a third negative result would be required before they can travel to other parts of Thailand.
Thailand closed its borders to international visitors on March 25, 2020, and has recorded 3395 cases and 58 deaths, but has gone 3 months without local transmission of the virus. Tourism accounts for about 18% of GDP, much of it from international visitors.

Where to Stay in Phuket
While Phuket is far from our favorite place in Thailand, here are our luxury resort recommendations:
Trisara
Trisara has a relatively small private beach, but has wonderfully private villas and overall some of the best service of the Phuket resorts, even if the dining, as at many of its luxury competitors, tends to be overpriced.

Rosewood Phuket
The Rosewood Phuket is the newest Phuket luxury resort, although the beach isn't nearly as nice as at Trisara and Amanpuri, and the pavilion plunge pools are small and shallow.

Amanpuri has a beautiful beach and enchanting landscaping and views, although some of the pavilions could use updating, as could some of the service.
