FAQ

Where Does SAS Fly From in the U.S.?

SAS flies from these U.S. gateway cities, which are eligible for the kids fly (almost) free offer:
  • Boston BOS
  • Chicago ORD
  • Los Angeles LAX
  • Miami MIA
  • Newark EWR
  • San Francisco SFO
  • Washington, DC IAD

How Much Are Taxes for a Child's Ticket?

For flights from Newark EWR, taxes/fees for a child ticket were consistently ~$50. They were similar for a SFO to Copenhagen nonstop that I checked, but taxes/fees tend to be higher if you have connections.

Do These Fares Earn Miles?

Yes, but you'll want to be careful where you credit them; since United would only award you 50% of the distance flown for the least expensive economy tickets, you probably won't want to credit to United. Double check with your favorite Star Alliance airline to see how miles are earned with SAS. Aegean or Singapore KrisFlyer could be good choices.

How Many Kids Can Each Adult Take?

Apparently each adult can take up to 8 kids and just pay the taxes/fees for each kid, as long as they're all 11 years old or younger. That sounds like a nightmare to me, but then, I only have one kid to wrangle.

Where to Stay in Scandinavia

While there are plenty of (relatively) inexpensive guesthouses, B&Bs and hotels, Scandinavia only has a few true luxury options, and as you'd expect, these are pricey in peak season, due to the higher cost of labor and the demand for the relatively few beds. Prices are lower in the off season, but still, count on spending at least $500 for a nicer room at the Grand Hotel Stockholm or at the D'Angleterre or Nimb in Copenhagen.

Here are my picks for where to stay in Sweden, Denmark, and Norway.

Stockholm

Grand Hotel Stockholm
Note that lower category rooms have side street views; for the best experience, be sure to reserve a room or suite with a harbor view.

Virtuoso Benefits
  • Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
  • Breakfast buffet in our restaurant (change to continental breakfast in 2018)
  • $100 USD Equivalent Resort or Hotel credit, to be utilized during stay (not combinable, not valid on room rate, no cash value if not redeemed in full)
  • Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
Grand Hotel Stockholm

Copenhagen

D'Angleterre
Clients have loved the D'Angleterre, including its central location, lavish buffet breakfast, and dinners at Marchal restaurant. The hotel also has a lovely pool, which is rare among central Copenhagen hotels.

Virtuoso Benefits
  • Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
  • Daily Buffet breakfast, for up to two in room guests
  • $100 USD Equivalent Food & Beverage credit, to be utilized at restaurant Marchal during stay (not valid for alcohol, not combinable, no cash value if not redeemed in full)
  • Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi

Nimb, in Tivoli

The Danes are usually at or near the top in the “Happiest people on earth” surveys, and Tivoli, one of Europe's oldest amusement parks, is the perfect place to indulge your kids or your own inner child. Boutique hotel Nimb, also known for high quality breakfasts and dining, is located right in Tivoli and includes admission. Just note that weekends can be quite noisy in the park, so light sleepers should either stay during the week or bring industrial strength earplugs for weekend stays.

Virtuoso Benefits
  • Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
  • Continental breakfast daily, for up to two in room guests (full breakfast offered in 2018)
  • A glass of wine/cocktail of the day per person
  • A special coffee table book about Tivoli Gardens (with almost 150 photos taken by famous photographer Harry Benson and an introduction to Tivoli by John Loring, design director of Tiffany & Co. in New York) In 2018, changes to Hygge Package – consists of a Hygge Book and a seasonal “bring Hygge home” gift
  • Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi

Oslo

Hotel Continental
I wouldn't put the Hotel Continental in the same league as the Grand Hotel Stockholm, D'Angleterre and Nimb, but Oslo just isn't known for its luxury properties. I recommend reserving a higher category room, as many of the entry level category rooms are disappointing.

Virtuoso Benefits
  • Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability (Virtuoso amenities and rates are only valid on Deluxe rooms and above)
  • Buffet breakfast daily for up to two in-room guests
  • $100 USD Equivalent Food & Beverage credit, at our legendary Theatercafeen, our lobby bar Dagligstuen or in Room Service (exclusive of alcohol, not combinable, no cash value if not redeemed in full)
  • Early check-in/late check-out, subject to availability
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
