This Morimoto Maui Review is from our 2021 site inspection stay at the Andaz Maui at Wailea. Morimoto Maui, as with Andaz Maui, opened in 2013, the southernmost Morimoto restaurant in the United States.

Morimoto Maui Location and Hours
Morimoto Maui is located at the Andaz Maui at Wailea, at 3550 Wailea Alanui Drive, a 30 minute drive from Kahului Airport (OGG). The restaurant, which has ocean views from its poolside location across the lawn from the beach, is open daily for lunch and dinner, from 12noon to 8pm.

Morimoto Maui Menu and Food
The Morimoto Maui menu includes both dishes that will appeal to traditionalists, such as the sushi and sashimi, the negitoromaki, and appetizers such as the grilled kama (fish collar), as well as more fusion cuisine, such as the tuna poke or hamachi taco appetizers, sticky ribs with tamarind glaze, local fish with Thai coconut curry, angry chicken, Morimoto pork chop, soft shell crab rolls, California rolls and more.

First to arrive was our Hamachi Tacos appetizer. They were colorful and delicious, but on the steep side at >$5 per taco, each one a couple bites. This is the kind of amuse bouche that would be complimentary at a higher end restaurant.

For his dinner, our son ordered Spicy Tuna and Eel Avocado rolls, which I sampled. Both were perfectly fine, but nothing special or any better than our local sushi place.

My husband ordered the Braised Black Cod, which was good, although no better than what we've made at home, and also too small a portion given his appetite.

The Local Market Vegetables, which we ordered as an afterthought, realizing we needed some vegetables, were unexpectedly good, as well as fairly priced. They were perfectly charred and salted, and burst with flavor.

I'd heard good things about the Morimoto Pork Chop, and it was our favorite dish of the evening. Not only was it perfectly seared and cooked, it was incredibly juicy and flavorful, and complemented well by the kimchee, bacon, and ginger apple puree. We highly recommend it.

We don't normally order dessert in Asian restaurants, but decided to try the chocolate, caramelized ganache dessert with banana and lilikoi. It came with mango instead of banana, and was a pleasing contrast of textures, but I can't say it was otherwise compelling for me, although that didn't stop my husband and son from devouring my share.

The Verdict
We enjoyed two standout dishes at Morimoto Maui, the Morimoto Pork Chop and Applesauce with kimchee and bacon, and the Local Market Vegetables. The Braised Black Cod, while good, was too small a portion to justify its price. Our son enjoyed his sushi, but it wasn't any more memorable than that from our local sushi place. The Hamachi Tacos were a delicious opening bite, but again, for the small amount of hamachi in each one, pricey for what it was. Service was pleasant, but our special occasion wasn't recognized in any way.
