Little Star Pizza San Francisco Restaurant Review

Little Star Pizza San Francisco Restaurant Review

Ever since our recent visit to Chicago, we've been craving deep dish pizza. While San Francisco has a number of excellent Italian restaurants, we were also surprised (given the city's relatively small size) to also find deep dish pizza. Of the several places, we decided we'd first try Little Star Pizza, located at 400 Valencia Street, which turned out to be an excellent bet.

Little Star Pizza Hours and Reservations

Little Star Pizza is open Sundays-Thursdays 11:30am-9pm, and Fridays and Saturdays until 10pm. We recommend making a reservation for dinner, particularly during popular dinner dining times 5:30-8pm.

Little Star Pizza Menu and Food

Helpfully, menus are already at each table. Deep dish pizzas come in either 9 inch or 12 inch versions, and during peak times, diners should allow up to 45 minutes for these to bake.

For the three of us, we ordered small versions of the roasted cauliflower and roasted broccolini (small servings are for two people). Both were fantastic, definitely above what I was expecting for a pizzeria. They were roasted crisp-tender and very flavorful, the cauliflower with garlic, chili, parsley, parmesan, olive oil and lemon, and the broccolini with fresh garlic, chili flakes, and lemon, finished with pecorino romano cheese.

The main event, of course, was the deep dish pizza, and it didn't disappoint; in fact, we even preferred it to the deep dish pizza we had in Chicago. The crunchy cornmeal crust held up well to the generous filling of marinara, homemade meatballs, mozzarella and ricotta.

The Verdict

It might seem odd to seek out Chicago-style deep dish pizza in San Francisco, but for those with a deep dish pizza craving, Little Star Pizza is an excellent bet. As a popular neighborhood place, we recommend making a reservation in advance when dining in, and as always, keep in mind a ~40 minute wait time for deep dish pizza. We greatly enjoyed our meatball deep dish pizza, but equally impressive were the well-prepared vegetable side dishes of roasted broccolini and cauliflower.
