Alaska Airlines Will Waive Cancellation Fees and Change Fees for Travel Booked Between Feb. 27 and March 12, 2020, for travel through June 1, 2020. It's great to see Alaska matching JetBlue in Suspending Cancel Fees and Change Fees, due to the understandable fears many passengers have about traveling right now, in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak. Here are the details:
- All Alaska Airlines fares (including Saver fares) booked by March 12, 2020 for travel by June 1, 2020 are eligible for the waiver
- For changes, no change fee will be charged, but fare difference will apply to the new travel dates. Travel must be completed by December 31, 2020.
- If the reservation is cancelled, the ticket amount will be refunded in the form of a travel credit in My Account Wallet, for future travel. Travel credits must be used within 1 year from date of issue.
As with JetBlue, Alaska Airlines is motivated to get nervous travelers to book, and since there is no refund to the original form of payment, only to travel credit, Alaska is able to book the revenue, even if the traveler ends up changing or cancelling and then rebooking.
If anything, now that the first U.S. coronavirus patient has died, and the patient was in Alaska's headquarters area of Seattle, this fee waiver is perhaps even more critical for Alaska Airlines than for JetBlue.
