NYC has endless pizza places, from low end pizza by the slice under heat lamps to artisanal pizza pies with black truffles or foie gras. Pizzetteria Brunetti offers Neapolitan style pies, from the simple and traditional to seasonal varieties, baked in just 90 seconds in a nearly 1000 degree wood burning oven.
Opened in 2013, the West Village address is the second location for father and son team Michael and Jason Brunetti, whose first Pizzetteria Brunetti is in Westhampton Beach.
Getting to Pizzetteria Brunetti
Pizzetteria Brunetti is located at 626 Hudson Street in the West Village, near Jane Street. It's a short walk from either the 8th Avenue subway station (E, L trains) and the 14th Street Station (1, 2, 3 trains).
Pizzetteria Brunetti Menu and Food
Pizzetteria Brunetti offers sandwiches, appetizers, salads, and for brunch, even egg dishes in addition to its pizzas, but for our first visit we were firmly focused on the house specialty, pizza. Even for pizza, there's a wide variety offered, ranging in price from $15 for a simple Margherita to $29 for the special “Hen & Boar” with hen of the woods mushrooms and wild boar sausage. The priciest is the $44 Pizza Alla Nicola with black truffle cream, black truffle carpaccio and imported smoked mozzarella.
Our visit was prompted by this weekend's Wall Street Journal short piece mentioning the Carbonara pizza–that sold my husband and the munchkin, who typically order pasta carbonara whenever they see it on a menu.
Pizzas are of course made to order, so even though the baking time is less than 2 minutes, it takes some time to prepare the pizza for firing. The wait was well worth it.
The Carbonara Pizza is slicked with egg yolk and EVOO (extra virgin olive oil), then sprinkled with freshly ground black pepper, grated parmesan cheese, Italian parsley, and pancetta. It truly was the pizza version of this beloved pasta dish, with a nice contrast between the creamy cheese and egg layer and the perfectly charred crust, puffy on the edges, along with the crispy pancetta. My only quibble is that I'd have liked to see more pancetta on the pizza, especially for the price. I can't help but recall that the mushroom pizza with parmesan and farm egg at ABC Kitchen is $20, and I personally would rather have that at the same price point.
If my husband and son couldn't get enough of the Carbonara (in fact, they ordered a second one), the Hen & Boar Pizza was my favorite. It came with a generous tangle of hen of the woods mushrooms and housemade wild boar sausage, flecked with garlic and crowned with fresh arugula. I liberally doused my slices with the accompanying Calbrian pepper sauce, which added just the right amount of heat.
The Service
Service was friendly and our water glasses were kept refilled, which is no small feat given how much water the three of us drink. Our server also willingly accommodated our request for more Calabrian pepper sauce, which we appreciated. We did have to walk up a couple of times when we couldn't attract the attention of our server, so if you require very attentive service, this may not be your place.
The Verdict
If you're craving traditional Neapolitan thin crust pizza, Pizzetteria Brunetti is an excellent choice in NYC, although make no mistake: this is not a budget place for dinner or brunch, since a pizza serves one and most pizzas are $15-$30, and most wines are $11-$16 a glass. Our brunch for the three of us, including 3 pizzas and 1 beer, came to $100 including tax and tip. There is a weekday $10 lunch special, but the three pizza choices are restricted to the Margherita, Marinara (no cheese) and the Sopressata.
It you've dined at Pizzetteria Brunetti, what's your favorite pizza?
