NYC Restaurant Week for Summer 2016 is July 25 – August 19 (3 weeks). A 3-course lunch is $29, and 3-course dinner is $42. You can also register your AMEX card to receive $5 back at least $35 in a single transaction, up to 4 times (so a maximum of $20) during NYC Restaurant Week.
AMEX NYC Restaurant Week Credit Details:
- Register your AMEX card by 12am ET August 19, 2014
- Corporate and prepaid AMEX cards not eligible
- Use the registered card for a dining purchase of $35 or more at any of the participating NYC Restaurant Week restaurants July 25 – August 19, 2016, and receive $5 statement credit back.
- Limit of up to 4 statement credit (total of $20) per enrolled card
- Statement credit will appear on your billing statement within 90 days after the offer end date
5X on Restaurants with Chase Freedom
Another great credit card to put your meals on is the Chase Freedom, which earns 5X at all restaurants and wholesale clubs (including Costco) for Q3 2016, on up to $1500 of spend. That's 7500 Ultimate Rewards points if you also have the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Ink Plus, and can transfer points to Ultimate Rewards partners such as Singapore KrisFlyer, United MileagePlus, Korean Air SkyPass, Air France / KLM Flying Blue, Hyatt Gold Passport and other partners.
Go Dutch to Maximize AMEX Statement Credits
If at least one of you is enrolled in the AMEX Restaurant Week promotion, I recommend splitting the bill so that you can either both earn $5 statement credit (if you both enrolled your AMEX cards) or the one who enrolled can earn a statement credit and the other can earn 5X points with a Chase Freedom.
Is Dinner Worth It?
$42 for dinner is on the pricey side, depending on the restaurant. I'd want to see a well reviewed restaurant with a great Restaurant Week menu for that price, given the great food it can buy at a number of NYC restaurants that don't participate in NYC Restaurant Week, for example Som Tum Der or for Isan / Northern Thai food, Gramercy Tavern for new American,
2. Morimoto New York (Weekday Lunch)
Morimoto Address: 88 10th Avenue, NYC at 16th Street
Morimoto is large enough that it doesn't fill up as quickly reservations-wise as Nobu, but generally food quality is high, and it's a good place to satisfying your sushi cravings.
4. Perry Street (Weekday Lunch)
Perry Street Address: 76 Perry Street, NYC (West Village)
It's true that Perry Street usually offers a prix fixe $29 lunch menu, although that is a two course menu and doesn't include dessert, as the 3-course Restaurant Week menu does. The chef at Perry Street is Cedric Vongerichten, Jean-Georges Vongerichten's son, who also designed the menu at the AMEX Centurion Lounge at New York LaGuardia Airport.
5. Cafe Boulud (Weekday Lunch)
Cafe Boulud Address: 20 E. 76th Street, between 5th and Madison Avenues
Cafe Boulud is on the Upper East Side at the The Surrey Hotel, so the crowd is typically a number of visitors as well as UES “ladies who lunch,” but the food is delicious.
Appetizer: Sesame Crusted Albacore Tuna with Yuzu or Arugula Salad with White Peach, Black Pepper Ricotta and Honey Vinaigrette
Entree: Scottish Salmon with Summer Squash and Zucchini Pesto or Pan Seared Pork Loin with Apricot Glaze, Lardons and Shallot Confit
Dessert: Lemon Tartlette with Berry Compote and Pistachio Ice Cream or Peach Ice Cream Sandwich
