Citi AAdvantage Credit Cards: Bye Bye 50K Visa and Rules to Earn 105K AA Miles

Citi AAdvantage Credit Cards: Bye Bye 50K Visa and New Rules to Earn 110K AA Miles

Update: At least for now, there is again a working 50K Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Visa link, as posted in Citi AAdvantage 50K Bonus for Platinum Select Visa Alive Again. Please see latest links on our Best Travel Credit Cards page and note that the links, as well as those on Flyertalk, go directly to the application page, there is no landing page that confirms the bonus. You can confirm the bonus after you have been approved, either when activating your card by phone or via secure message.

The 50K Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select Visa and 50K CitiBusiness offers are finally dead. Previously, in Citi AAdvantage Credit Cards: New Rules to Earn 130K AA Miles, I wrote that it was possible to earn 130,000 American AAdvantage miles with the 50K Citi Platinum Select Visa, 50K CitiBusiness Visa, and the 25K Citi AAdvantage Gold Card.

Now, with the elimination of the 50,000 AA mile offers, 110,000 AA miles is the maximum you can earn in a relatively short time period, by applying for 3 Citi AAdvantage cards over 65 days or so. The rules haven't changed, but for new readers it could be helpful to summarize:

  • Only 1 Citi credit card application per day (say 25 hour period or so)
  • Only 2 Citi credit card applications within ~65 days
  • It is possible to apply for the same Citi credit card again and receive the bonus, but you'll have to wait ~18-22 months from the date of approval of your original Citi credit card
If you're eligible to apply for the following Citi AAdvantage credit cards, here's what I'd recommend:

1. Day 1: Apply for Citi AAdvantage Platinum Card for 40K AAdvantage Miles

Assuming you've waited long enough since your prior Citi AAdvantage card and Citi personal credit card applications, apply for the Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage Visa for 40,000 AAdvantage miles.

  • 40K AA miles after spending $3000 within the first 3 months
  • 2 AAdvantage miles per $1 spend on eligible American Airlines purchases
  • 1 AAdvantage mile per $1 of all other spend
  • 10 Percent AAdvantage Miles Award Rebate on redeemed AAdvantage awards, up to 10,000 AA miles per year
  • First year annual fee waived, then $95 per year

2. Day 2: Apply for Citi AAdvantage Gold Card for 25K AAdvantage Miles

On Day 2 or 3 apply for the Citi AAdvantage Gold Card for 30,000 AAdvantage miles

  • 25K AA miles after spending $750 within the first 4 months
  • First year annual fee waived, then $50 per year

3. Day 66 or 67: Apply for CitiBusiness AAdvantage World MasterCard for 40K AAdvantage Miles

About 65 days after your most recent Citi credit card application, you can apply for a CitiBusiness AAdvantage World MasterCard.

You can apply for a CitiBusiness credit card (and other business credit cards) as a sole proprietor; you do not need a different business name or EIN, as you can use your SSN.

  • 40K AA miles after spending $3000 within the first 3 months
  • First year annual fee waived, then $95 per year

If you successfully apply for and meet minimum spend on the above 3 cards under the current offers, you'll receive a total of 105K AAdvantage miles.

The Rewards of AAdvantage Miles

AAdvantage miles are great to have for international award travel, such as Cathay Pacific First Class, Cathay Pacific Business Class, Etihad First Class, Qantas First Class, LAN Business Class, and soon, once Qatar joins oneworld, Qatar Business Class.

Note that for short flights on American in the U.S., the U.S. and Canada, or the U.S. and the Caribbean, or intra-Asia and intra-Europe flights, it's often a better deal to use British Airways Avios.

Have you earned AAdvantage miles recently with Citi AAdvantage credit cards?
