Aman Tokyo Lobby

This Aman Tokyo Hotel Review is from my recent stay at the first "vertical Aman" which is another client favorite among Tokyo luxury hotels, and has the distinction of having the largest entry level rooms in Tokyo, since Deluxe Rooms are 764 square feet (71 square meters).

Aman Tokyo Location, Check-in and Lobby

Aman Tokyo is located in The Otemachi Tower, at 1-5-6 Otemachi in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, and is connected to the Otemachi subway station, with 5 lines providing easy access around Tokyo. But it's also easy to get around by foot; Tokyo Station is just a 7-8 minute walk away, the Imperial Palace a 15 minute walk, and Ginza about a 20 minute walk.

After entering at ground level, you take the elevator to the 33rd floor, to the soaring lobby.

Aman Tokyo Lobby

We were mesmerized by the spaciousness of the lobby, particularly for a hotel with just 84 rooms and suites. It's the largest Aman, since most Amans have 40 free standing villas or fewer, but small for Tokyo, where the Peninsula Tokyo has over 300 rooms and suites, the Mandarin Oriental has 178 rooms and suites, and the Shangri-La Tokyo has 200 rooms and suites. Only the Four Seasons Tokyo Marunouchi is smaller, as a boutique-type property with just 57 rooms and suites.

We were presented cool oshibori moist towels, as well as a refreshing plum welcome drink. Check-in was quickly completed and we were escorted up to our Premier Room.

Aman Tokyo Premier Room

We'd reserved a Deluxe Room which is already suite-sized at 764 square feet, but were upgraded to an even larger Premier Room, which is 861 square feet. Here's the hallway on the way to our Premier Room on the 37th floor (guest rooms are located on floors 34-38).

Here's a quick YouTube video overview of the room:

As you can see from the video, from the entry foyer you enter the bedroom, with a desk behind the king bed and behind that two good sized closets and a bench for your suitcases. Here's a view from a corner of the desk area across the room to the windows and the bathroom:

Our son's extra bed had already been placed in the room, which I appreciated, and in a room this spacious it took up comparatively very little room.

The living area features a black sofa and table with chairs, by floor to ceiling windows.

It was pretty at night to see the Tokyo skyline:

The welcome amenities were beautifully presented, Aman style: a bottle of French red wine, scrumptious chocolates (we saved them and savored on some of our shinkansen journeys--some of the best dark chocolates I've ever received as a welcome amenity) and some cute tuxedo-clad chocolate covered strawberries for our son, along with a paper balloon which he *loved.* In fact, he was heartbroken when it was mistakenly thrown away at another hotel, so I'm in the process of getting a replacement one, via Amazon. Aman knows kids!

If you like luxury hotels with great bathrooms and appreciate clean lines and minimalist decor, you'll love the Aman Tokyo bathroom, separated from the room by shoji doors. Naturally there are double vanities with his and hers sinks:

There's a separate toilet chamber with a Toto washlet:

The ofuro (bath) is accompanied with soaking salts infused with cedar, and there was even a fresh sweet Watson Pomelo to add a seasonal element to the bath. I tried it, and it was indeed a delicious and invigorating scent.

If you're not a bath person, there's also a rain shower. Bath products are Aman's own, with a light lemongrass scent, which frankly I liked best over the other designer bath products in the other luxury hotels we stayed in on this trip.

Best of all, the bathroom has a heated floor, which felt absolutely lovely after getting out of the bath or shower.

Aman Tokyo Swimming Pool

Don't miss a visit to the swimming pool, on the 34th floor, where the Aman Spa and fitness center are also located. Even though we visited the hotel during one of its busiest seasons, in late March, we were the only ones in the pool area in the late morning. My son had a blast swimming some laps then splashing in the water, since there were no other guests around.

As soon as we entered the pool area, an attendant brought oshibori for us and ice water. Aman pool service even in Tokyo!

My husband meanwhile greatly enjoyed soaking in the men's bath, reachable through the locker room. As there are separate men's and women's baths and my understanding is that it's traditional Japanese (nude) guests must be 16 or over.

Breakfast at The Restaurant at Aman Tokyo

Since we dined out at a sushi bar the evening of our stay, we only experienced The Restaurant at Aman Tokyo for breakfast. It's just off the lobby, and on a clear day has panoramic city views.

I'll post more breakfast menu photos later, but what caught my eye (given that we're all pancake fiends) was the Pancake Set:

It started well, with some fresh squeezed orange juice and coffee:

OJ

I'm not usually much of an eggs benedict person, but if every eggs bendict was as tasty as the version served at Aman Tokyo, with its perfect hollandaise and tasty mushroom ragout and spinach additions, I'd order it more often.

The banana hazelnut pancakes were so good that even my husband and son, who'd had breakfast earlier, when I was working, stole some tax bites. The additional dark chocolate sauce and ricotta with berries made it practically a dessert. I'll admit that my favorite pancakes are still the lemon souffle pancakes at Amanjiwo, however.

The Verdict

The Aman Tokyo is a worthwhile splurge for celebrating a birthday, anniversary, honeymoon, or other special occasion in Tokyo. With rooms on the 34th-38th floors, you'll have an inspiring view of Tokyo no matter which "room" or suite you're in--and I put room in quotes, because even entry level rooms are the size of small suites for many other Tokyo hotels.

I also appreciated the attentive service which Aman is known for, from the refreshing towels and welcome drink, along with reconfirmation of our dinner reservation, to the lovely and tasty welcome treats in the room, and with the extra bed for our son already in the room, to turndown treats, which were elegant Japanese fans:

Breakfast was a little slow, and I would love Aman to adopt Four Seasons' customized bed so as to always have a plusher mattress, but those are really my only criticisms in an otherwise fantastic stay. We were sad to leave...

Thank you Hilary for arranging our return visit to Aman Tokyo. We've just returned and already miss the gracious and attentive service you so accurately described. Our son also loves the pool there which for Tokyo or even any other outdoor location is huge (30 meters!) Your attention to detail was so evident in our stay being perfect ! -Gene G
