This The Peninsula Tokyo Hotel Review is from our recent stay at the hotel during the holiday season. A significant advantage when reserving it as a TravelSort Client is the flexible check-in and check-out PenClub benefit, which guarantees you an early check-in from 6am of your arrival date, as well as a late check-out until 10pm of your departure date. If your reserved room or suite isn't quite ready, you'll be provided another room to enjoy until your room or suite is ready. After a red eye flight, it's wonderful to be able to go straight up to your room to catch up on sleep or shower and refresh. Another benefit is a guaranteed upgrade at time of booking.

The Peninsula Tokyo Location, Check-in and Lobby

The Peninsula Tokyo is located at 1-8-1 Yurakucho, Chiyoda-ku in central Tokyo. It's directly connected to Hibiya subway station, and about a 15 minute walk from Tokyo Station. It's across from Hibiya Park and also close to the Imperial Palace Gardens and Ginza shopping. Those who want to arrive in style can reserve a transfer in one of the hotel's Rolls Royces; this 1934 Rolls Royce Phantom II is used for wedding couples.

In spring on a previous visit, the lobby of the hotel featured lovely cherry blossoms, but on this occasion, before the winter holidays, it was decked out for Christmas. There's a striking fireworks-inspired crystal chandelier. You bear to the left for the reception desk. Our evening check-in went smoothly, and we were escorted up to our Premier Room.

The Peninsula Tokyo Premier Room

The Peninsula Tokyo offers some of the largest entry level guest rooms in Tokyo, apart from the Aman Tokyo. Deluxe Rooms, Premier Rooms and Grand Premier Garden Rooms are all 579 square feet (54 sq. m.), and this meant that even with our son's extra bed in the room, it still felt spacious.

The room is very handsome and still very fresh and meticulously maintained. We especially loved the wooden door that separates the room from the entrance hallway, and the woven design on the ceiling. The Japanese influence is palpable but subtle.

We arrived in the evening after a rather stressful day, so the beautifully arranged fresh fruit plate welcome amenity was exactly what we craved.

While we didn't have occasion to use them, there's a Nespresso machine, Japanese teapot and teacups, and chilled mini bar.

There's ample room to unpack and hang your clothes, since the large walk-in closet offers both his and hers closet space and benches to open your suitcase on. There's also a vanity to sit at, which can double as a work desk if one of you needs to get some work done while the rest of the family sleeps. I'd admired this design at The Peninsula Paris, which also features this large walk in closet space.

The Peninsula Tokyo also features a Valet closet, through which you can leave your shoes and laundry for cleaning, and pick up your newspaper. Simply put your items for pick up, call to let the valet know, and press the “Valet Service” button.

Opposite the walk in closet is a spacious bathroom that likewise reminded me of the well-designed bathroom at The Peninsula Paris, with double vanities, a TV positioned so you can watch it while soaking in the bath, a rain shower, and a separate toilet chamber with a Toto washlet. Bath products are exclusive to the Peninsula Tokyo, by Japanese perfumer Satori Osawa.

The Peninsula Tokyo Swimming Pool and Fitness Center

The Peninsula Tokyo has an indoor heated swimming pool that is 20 meters (65 feet) long that is open 6:30am-10pm, with children's hours (kids must be age 4 and older) 9am-6pm on weekdays and 9am-8pm on weekends and public holidays. I think this is a reasonable compromise between enabling adults to swim laps in the early morning and evening or otherwise enjoy the pool without little kids, and accommodating families who may have chosen the hotel mainly for its pool, since kids need some downtime, especially in a very urban environment such as Tokyo. While we didn't use it, there's also a fitness center.

Breakfast at The Peninsula Tokyo

Complimentary breakfast is included for TravelSort Clients and is served in the Lobby Lounge from 6:30-11am daily. I chose the Japanese set breakfast, while my teen chose The Peninsula Breakfast with the souffle pancake.

We both had orange juice, and I had some Japanese tea as well.

We were invited to choose a bread or pastry from a freshly baked assortment; the pear danish was especially delicious.

Since I was quite hungry, I was happy to have chosen the Japanese Breakfast, with its bento box assortment of silky tofu and other appetizers, as well as steamed rice, grilled fish, Japanese pickles, miso soup, and pear.

I ended up sharing some of my meal with my teen, since the souffle pancake with berry compote and cream, while delicious, wasn't a very large portion.

The Verdict

We enjoyed our brief Peninsula Tokyo stay, particularly its convenient central location; the spacious room and bathroom, with its spacious walk in closet; large and light-filled pool area; and delicious Japanese breakfast. The bed is a bit firmer than we prefer, but the hotel's PenClub flexible check-in and check-out times are a huge plus when arriving early and/or departing late.

If you've stayed recently at The Peninsula Tokyo what was your experience?
