Dinner at Brasserie Prince

I'd made an early dinner reservation, although there was still a slight wait to be seated as the host wasn't at the host stand. Once he returned, I was seated in a quiet part of the restaurant. Here's the dinner menu:

I opted for a light dinner so as to save room for dessert. First to arrive was the spiced lentil salad with crispy shallots and artichoke; I ordered the appetizer portion for GBP 11, although a main course size portion is also available for GBP 21. It was tasty and nicely presented as a timbale.

The French Onion Soup was authentic, with a rich beef broth and plenty of caramelized onions; perfect if you're having a salad or other light accompaniment since this is a filling soup.

For dessert, I tried the Hazelnut Profiteroles with hazelnut ice cream, hazelnut praline, and a caramel sauce, which was excellent, and as good as the best I've had in France.

The breakfast buffet offered a fantastic variety of fresh fruit during my summer visit, from peaches, pineapple and strawberries to a full array of berries: raspberries, blueberries and blackberries, which are often missing from even luxury hotel breakfast buffets these days due to cost cutting.

In addition to yogurt (cow's milk as well as sheep's milk) there were cheeses, chia seed pudding, and hot items such as sausages, bacon, black pudding, pancakes, etc.

I particularly enjoyed the berries, yogurt, smoked salmon with scrambled eggs as my hot dish, and pain aux raisins pastry accompanied by an expertly made cappuccino.

The Verdict

My best breakfast in Edinburgh was at Brasserie Prince at The Balmoral, with its plethora of fresh fruit, including raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries, which aren't always provided on hotel breakfast buffets. I also enjoyed my dinner of authentic French Onion Soup, lentil salad, and hazelnut profiteroles; the dessert in particular was a stellar, so save room for dessert.
