Available Again: Renew Your US Passport Online

.

October 2022 Update: As of 10/11/22, it's again possible to renew a U.S. passport online. As noted below, you'll first need to have a MyTravelGov account. After creating that account, you'll receive an email with a link to click to verify the new account. It may take between several hours to a day for your account to be registered with the State Department, after which you'll be able to log in to your new MyTravelGov account to begin your passport renewal. Note the requirements below; you won't be able to renew a passport online unless your current or previous passport was valid for 10 years, and you're age 25 or older.

August 2022 Update: The Beta form is no longer available, but the first 25,000 applicants in August 2022 will be able to renew a U.S. passport online to test the portal.

Renew a U.S. Passport Online, as part of a beta initiative resulting from an executive order (see Online Passport Renewal: New White House Executive Order).Typically, renewing a U.S. passport takes about one month but can take up to 11 weeks if you choose regular rather than expedited service. That's not terribly convenient, since you can't travel internationally during that time. An alternative is Expedited Service (which costs $60 extra, on top of the $130 passport renewal fee), where processing time is 5-7 weeks instead of the 8-11 weeks of Regular Service; paying for 1-2 day return delivery adds an additional $18.32

By renewing online, turnaround time can be greatly shortened; some have reported receiving their renewed passport in just one week, even with routine service. Here are the details:

Request Online U.S. Passport Renewal

  • Complete the Renew Your U.S. Passport Online form.
  • Note that to be eligible, your recent passport must have been issued over 9 years ago (in 2013) but less than 15 years ago (in 2007) from the date you plan to submit your application. Your passport can be expired.
  • You must be age 25 or older, with a current or recent passport with a 10 year validity
  • You must be in physical possession of your existing passport, and it cannot be damaged or mutilated
  • All of your personal details (name, gender, date of birth, place of birth) must remain the same as in your existing passport
  • Online passport renewal is only for people age 16 and older; kids under 16 cannot renew online
  • You must reside in the U.S.

Next Steps

After submitting the above form, you'll receive an email that instructs you to create a MyTravelGov account in order to renew your passport online.

  • Be sure to use the same email address that you used for the Renew Your U.S. Passport Online form that you submitted
  • Use Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge as your browser when creating your MyTravelGov account, as Safari and Firefox browsers tend to result in technical issues.
  • You may have to wait up to one week after creating the MyTravelGov account before you can renew your passport online, so build this into your timeframe.

Since we're still over one year out from our passport expiration dates we haven't been able to try renewing online yet, but we'd love to hear from TravelSort readers who have successfully renewed online. How did the process go, and how long did it take for you to receive your renewed passport, either using regular or expedited service?

Thanks for this post; the process was easy and undoubtedly will result in a much faster turnaround. I chose a larger book, expedited & priority usps service. Appreciate your blog.

How long did it actually take before you received your passport? I have the same situation. I did the expedited service in hopes of a short turnaround. Submitted my app on 1/26 and as of 2/23, no response other than in process.
