Japan is a wonderful destination in its own right for so many reasons, but it also attracts quality, including quality French pastry titans such as Pierre Herme. Pierre Herme is particularly known for its macarons (much better than Laduree) but we actually prefer some of the pastries.
The photos below are just a sampling of what's on offer at the Pierre Herme Nihonbashi shop in Mitsukoshi Department Store (basement level, open 10am-7:30pm daily) located at 1 Chome-4-1 Nihonbashimuromachi, and because it's Pierre Herme, it tastes even better than it looks:

This was a delicious seasonal pastry filled with marrons glace (candied chestnut) cream and adorned with crisp florentines on the sides and a candied walnut on top:

Pierre Herme has several locations in Tokyo, including at Tokyo Station, and if you have a sweet tooth and enjoy hazelnuts but don't live in Paris or another place that has Pierre Herme pastries, we highly recommend the 2000 Feuilles pictured above. It's our favorite among the Pierre Herme pastries that are available year-round, and there are seasonal ones worth trying as well.
