Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas Hotel Review

MOzen Bistro at the Mandarin Oriental is known for its variety of Asian specialties, and is a local favorite for its Sunday Brunch. I was keen to try a high end Las Vegas Sunday brunch, to compare it to the more traditional Buffet at the Bellagio that I'd tried a few days before.

After checking into the Mandarin Oriental, I took the elevator down to the 3rd floor to MOzen Bistro, where I was welcomed and shown to a table by the window. The two main seating areas of MOzen are light filled spaces done up in modern natural colors.

MOzen Bistro's Sunday brunch isn't inexpensive, at $58 per person, but in addition to a well curated selection of salads, appetizers, seafood, sushi, fruits and desserts, it also provides a choice of made to order entrees–and these aren't just eggs benedict or waffles, although those are available if you prefer.

My first stop was some carved to order char siu, which was some of the best I've ever tasted. There were also har gao and another type of dim sum, and unsurprisingly they were much better quality than the ones at The Buffet at the Bellagio.

While there were several different appetizer and salad options, I didn't try any of them, in order to save room for the seafood and sushi.

If you had a craving for honeycomb, that was on offer as well, along with dried fruits and nuts:

There was a platter of smoked salmon, which I took some of, but what really got my attention was the beautiful seafood platter of Kumamoto oysters, crab claws and plump shrimp, with all the traditional accompaniments available. This kind of quality is where the value is at in MOzen's Sunday Brunch:

At first glance the sushi selection didn't look that impressive–a number of rolls, plus some Unagi nigiri and some prettily cut tofu:

But then I discovered that you could request sashimi cut to order, so I enjoyed a plate of mostly hamachi (yellowtail), salmon and tuna:

And here's my plate of seafood and the pre-made sushi:

My server checked in with me at this point to see if I'd like my selected entree of Pan Seared Diver Sea Scallops, and quite soon they were served to me. The sea scallops were cooked perfectly, although I wasn't particularly fond of the tomato thyme broth it came with, though this is a matter of personal preference.

I was already filling up, so I turned my attention to the array of fresh fruits, which included the usual suspects of pineapple, apples, watermelon, etc., but also fresh berries and dragonfruit:

And finally, I wandered over to the other room, where miniature desserts were set up. The favorites, judging by how many had been taken (they were replenished shortly after I took these photos) were the cherry cheesecakes and the creme brulee:

A very nice touch was the live jazz performed by a guitarist and bass player, which provided a great atmosphere in which to linger.

The Verdict: MOzen Bistro's Sunday Brunch is a great bet for Sunday brunch in Las Vegas if you prefer quality over an endless array of choices, and particularly if you enjoy seafood. If you feast on fresh oysters, crab claws, shrimp cocktail, sashimi and the sea scallop entree, as I did, the admittedly steep price still represents value, particularly given the impeccable service and elegant yet relaxed ambience, with live jazz. It's not so formal that families will feel out of place–I saw a couple families with young kids.
