Hyatt 20 Percent Points Refund Promo and FAQ

Hyatt 20% Points Refund Promo and FAQ

A new Hyatt Promo offers a 20% points rebate when you redeem points for award nights or points + cash stays 2/17/15 to 7/31/15. It's of no use for our stays, but it may come in handy for some readers. Here are the details:

  • Hyatt Credit Cardmembers with accounts in good standing as of January 31, 2015 are eligible (update: Hyatt Concierge claims even new Hyatt Visa cardmembers are eligible, as long as they register by March 31, 2015. See FAQ below)
  • Register for the Hyatt 20% points back promo by March 31, 2015
  • Hyatt Gold Passport points must be redeemed 2/17/15 to 7/31/15 (entire stay must be completed by 7/31/15)
  • Award stays, points + cash stays, dining and spa redemptions are all eligible
  • Allow 4-6 weeks after the points redemption for the 20% points rebate to post to your Hyatt Gold Passport Account

I was mildly excited when I first saw this Hyatt promo announced on Flyertalk, but got rather frustrated when the 3 potential points + cash stays I was considering making turned out to not only have no award availability for the dates I wanted, but NO points + cash award availability for the entire three months of May, June and July. No kidding–talk about stingy Hyatts.

The only other potential award booking during the promo dates would yield only 1.2 cents per Hyatt point redeemed, which I personally won't redeem for–I'd rather pay cash at that point. I do have a stay at a Category 7 Hyatt later this year, but of course it's too late for this promo.

At any rate, here's a FAQ for those who can get the award availability and economics to work for them:

FAQ

Are Any Hyatt Gold Passport Members Outside the U.S. Eligible?

Unfortunately not, unless you somehow have a U.S. issued Hyatt Visa.

I Just Got My Hyatt Visa and Am Told I'm Not Eligible!

The terms do state you have to have been a Hyatt Credt Cardmember in good standing as of January 31, 2015, so you technically aren't eligible according to the written terms. However, per a DM I received from Hyatt Concierge, even new Hyatt Visa cardmembers are eligible if you register by the 3/31 deadline. It can take 1-2 weeks for your new account to reflect in Hyatt Gold Passport, so don't wait until the end of March to apply if you want a shot at being eligible–I'd apply by mid-March at the latest, and preferably before.

I'm a Hyatt Diamond Elite But Don't Have the Hyatt Visa–Any Way to Be Eligible?

See above: at least according to Hyatt Concierge on Twitter, you can apply now to get the Hyatt Visa and register anytime until March 31, 2015 to be eligible.

I Have the Hyatt Credit Card But Can't Register via the Link–Why Not?

Be sure to reach out to Hyatt by calling Gold Passport (or better, the Diamond line if you're a Diamond elite member) since at least one Flyertalk poster, SanDiego1K, noted that a Hyatt Private Line Agent was able to register him.

I Already Have Award Stays Booked During the Promo–Do I Have to Cancel and Rebook?

Per Hyatt Concierge on Twitter, no–as long as your stay falls within the promotional period, you do not need to cancel and rebook. This is good news, since some award stays are no longer possible to rebook due to limited award inventory.

Can I Receive Virtuoso Amenities on Award Stays or Points + Cash Stays?

No: Virtuoso benefits, for certain Park Hyatt and other high end Hyatt hotels that are Virtuoso members, only apply if TravelSort or your Virtuoso luxury travel advisor books a fully paid rate; they do not apply on any award stays.

What's a Good Rule of Thumb for Redeeming Hyatt Gold Passport Points vs. Paying Cash?

Everyone values their points a bit differently. Personally, I don't redeem Hyatt points unless I'm getting at least 2.5 cents or more in value per point, but others have higher or lower thresholds. That's because virtually all my points are earned via Ultimate Rewards points, and typically I'd rather save those for transfers to Singapore KrisFlyer. For those who actually do stay at a lot of Hyatts and earn plenty of Hyatt Gold Passport points, the threshold may be lower.

What Are the Hyatt Points + Cash Rates?

Here is the Hyatt Points + Cash Award Chart. The rate depends on the Hyatt category of the hotel you're booking:

There Are No Points + Cash Stays Available–Why Not?

Hyatt properties have discretion over whether to make points + cash stays available, so there are properties where nothing is released for months at a time. In contrast, outright award stays *must* be made available as long as a standard room is being sold for that night. Just make sure you check to see what a standard room is, since hotels such as the Park Hyatt New York may have very few standard rooms available period, making it that much harder to book an award night.
