Mid-Tier Hotel Elite Status: How to Get It and Is it Worth It?

Mid-Tier Hotel Elite Status: How to Get It and Is It Worth It?

Mid-Tier Hotel Elite Status available more easily than staying a number of nights with the hotel chain, and is it worth it?

Mid-tier hotel elite status can be nice, if you earn it anyway from work travel or via a credit card that you'd have anyway. It may get you a slightly upgraded room, extra points, and in the case of Hilton Gold,  and Marriott Gold, a free breakfast.

But keep in mind that for luxury properties, you'll actually do better by booking as a TravelSort Client to obtain Virtuoso benefits, for those hotels that are Virtuoso members. That's because Virtuoso benefits include an upgrade if available at check-in, complimentary breakfast, and also a hotel or resort experience or credit, typically worth $100, for the stay. Even top-tier elites don't receive that extra property-specific benefit worth $100 for their stays, so it's always worth booking paid stays with Virtuoso if the hotel is a member.

Here are the best ways to earn mid-tier hotel status if you won't earn them by stays alone, along with some of the top properties of each chain that are Virtuoso members.

FAQ

Do Elite Benefits Apply to Award Stays?

Usually, yes, although not at InterContinental hotels. Some InterContinental hotels may provide benefits anyway, but they aren't required to–an award stay only entitles you to a basic, entry-level room and no elite benefits.

Do Elite Benefits Apply to Cash and Points Stays?

For hotels that offer them, such as SPG, Hyatt and Hilton, yes.

If I Book Multiple Rooms, Do Elite Benefits Apply to All the Rooms, or Just The Room of the Elite Member?

Typically just the room of the elite member, although with SPG, you can earn credit towards elite status for up to three rooms, including his/her own. But the guests in the other two rooms would not enjoy elite benefits unless they also happen to have SPG elite status. See Faster SPG Elite Status by Booking Multiple Rooms.

Do I Have to Book Directly with the Hotel or Virtuoso Travel Advisor to Enjoy Elite Benefits?

To be safe, yes. In practice, Hyatt and Marriott hotels have often been known to provide elite benefits (although not points) to third party bookings. SPG and Hilton do not. Note that all Virtuoso bookings earn points toward elite status and count the same as direct bookings with the hotel.

Can I Combine Elite Benefits and Virtuoso Benefits?

Yes, on a fully paid booking. Note that you must book a fully flexible, non promotional rate for Virtuoso benefits to apply.
