If you transfer British Airways Avios to Iberia Plus, you can avoid much of the high fuel surcharges that British Airways Avios awards tickets to Europe or going through London are notorious for. For example, let's look at the NYC-Madrid nonstop Iberia operates. Booking with Iberia Plus Avios, the JFK-MAD one way would be 40,000 Avios + $91 in taxes and fees.
If, however, you book using British Airways Avios, you'd still pay 40,000 Avios, but with $452 in taxes and fees, due to those hefty fuel surcharges! So you'd save over $350 on just that one way award ticket.
While this isn't new, I do still get reader questions about it, so here's a quick how-to if you haven't already linked your British Airways Avios and Iberia Plus Avios.
1. Have an Iberia Plus Account Open and Active for 3 Months
Open an Iberia Plus Account: If you don't yet have one, you can register for an Iberia Plus account. Note that both your British Airways Avios and Iberia Plus Avios accounts must be open for at least 3 months before you can transfer BA Avios to Iberia Plus.
Activate your Iberia Plus Account: You'll need at least 1 Avios point in your Iberia Plus account to be able to transfer your British Airways Avios to your Iberia Plus account. If you don't have an easy way to earn a small amount of Iberia Avios points, you could transfer 1000 AMEX Membership Rewards points to Iberia.
2. In Your British Airways Executive Club Account, Go to Manage Your Account, then “Combine Avios”

4. Decide How Many British Airways Avios You'd Like to Transfer to Iberia Plus
