This Review of Hotel d'Angleterre, Copenhagen is from our 2018 visit, following our stay at Nimb Hotel. The d'Angleterre is one of the world's first luxury hotels, dating back to 1755, although the current building dates to the 1870s.
Hotel d'Angleterre Location, Lobby, and Check-In
Hotel d'Angleterre is located at Kongens Nytorv 34 in central Copenhagen. Kongens Nytorv means “the king's new square,” and it was created in 1670 by King Christian V, inspired by early 17th century Paris. Nearby is the Charlottenborg Palace, the Royal Danish Theatre, the pedestrianized Strøget street, and the beginning of Nyhavn (New Harbor), with its colorful 17th and early 18th century houses now home to many cafes, restaurants, and shops.
The Kongens Nytorv Metro Station is just a 1 minute walk, and the metro takes only about 20 minutes to reach the Copenhagen Airport–one of the fastest public transit journeys from airport to city center in Europe.
Beautiful orchids greeted us in the lobby upon entering. To the right is the Reception, where we checked in, and the Concierge Desk. While our suite wasn't quite ready, since we arrived around noon, we were able to check-in and leave our bags and return later that afternoon. When we returned, our luggage had already been placed in the room.
The lobby seating is just up a short flight of stairs. It's quite dim, so atmospheric, but the restaurant gets much better natural light.

Here's my d'Angleterre Copenhagen YouTube video review. My full review of the hotel will be added to this post soon.
Superior One Bedroom Suite
We were in a Superior One Bedroom Suite, thanks to a Virtuoso upgrade, which was very convenient as it gave my husband and me a separate bedroom, while an extra bed for our son was placed in the living room. Superior One Bedroom Suites are moderate in size, at 538 square feet, but the clever use of space and light-filled living room made it seem larger. I especially liked the dual exposure of the living room, with its many windows.
While I have my own travel adapter, I was happy to see that an adapter was supplied on the work desk, since my husband has yet to get his own and we have several devices between us that need charging.
There was a Nespresso machine and mini bar in the living room, which kept us well supplied with caffeine, although Copenhagen also has many excellent cafes.
The bathroom is between the living room and the bedroom, and was on the small side, with just one sink, but still managed to have both a soaking tub (see it in the above video) and separate glass enclosed rain shower.
Bath products are by Amazing Space by Laura Bonne, which operates the hotel's spa, and also included handy makeup remover wipes.
The bedroom features a King size DUX bed, which was very comfortable. We also appreciated the great glazing and soundproofing, as the suite was very quiet despite facing the street.
d'Angleterre Breakfast at Marchal Restaurant
Virtuoso benefits include complimentary daily buffet breakfast for two at Marchal Restaurant, which currently costs EUR 43 (~$49) per person. The breakfast buffet is quite comprehensive, with a variety of fresh vegetables and fruit (including fresh passion fruit, one of my favorites), yogurts, bircher muesli, cold cuts, cheeses, smoked salmon, fresh breads and pastries, cereals, juices and smoothies.
Also included in the buffet is the option to request eggs cooked to order, including an omelet with a choice of fillings, which were very good.
Champagne, tea, and coffee, including espresso drinks, are also included.
Spa and Swimming Pool
The d'Angleterre is the only central Copenhagen hotel with a heated swimming pool, which is indoors and can be enjoyed all year round. The pool and Amazing Space by Laura Bonne Spa is located on the lower level, and is open weekdays 7am-9pm, and weekends 8am-7pm. There's also a sauna and steam room.
The Verdict
We loved the central location of the Hotel d'Angleterre, which made it easy to walk on foot to many sights, or easily take public transportation to others. For a family of three, a Superior One Bedroom Suite is perfect, since it has a separate bedroom for the parents, and an extra bed for our child easily fit in the living room. I especially appreciated the excellent window glazing and soundproofing, which made the suite very quiet even though it faced a couple of streets. We also liked the heated indoor swimming pool, which is usable all year round, unlike Nimb's rooftop pool. Marchal Restaurant, which I reviewed separately, was excellent if pricey (as many Michelin star restaurants in Copenhagen are). Breakfast was very good, although I give a slight edge to Nimb, as I enjoyed having more creative choices on the breakfast menu.
That said, I wouldn't have wanted to miss our stay at Nimb Hotel, thanks to its incredible location inside Tivoli Gardens. For guests with kids, I highly recommend splitting your stay between the two hotels, as we did.
