Hawaii: When Will Interisland Travel Without Quarantine Reopen?

.

Hawaii Reopens to Transpacific Travel 10/15, But When Does Hawaii Interisland Travel Reopen Without Needing to Quarantine? Locals have pointed out that visitors from the mainland can more easily get tested so as to avoid Hawaii's mandatory 14-day quarantine, yet the 14-day quarantine remains for locals for all interisland travel, except for those traveling from the outer islands to Oahu, which has the highest number of COVID-19 cases.

But there's good news: for those who are able to test negative for coronavirus within the 72 hours prior to interisland travel, they will be able to avoid the 14-day quarantine, Governor Ige has verbally confirmed to Maui Mayor Victorino per Maui Now.

The most feasible way to get tested may be Vault Health (see Hawaiian Airlines COVID-19 Testing via Vault Health), by ordering the test well in advance of travel, undertaking the video-supervised saliva sample collection 72 hours prior to the interisland flight, and immediately mailing it back to Vault Health. Keep in mind that coming from Hawaii, it could take a couple days to get to the Vault Health Lab (instead of overnight as on the mainland) but the Hawaiian Airlines program does promise results within 24 hours of Vault Health receiving the sample, so it could just barely return the results in time, absent any delays. And presumably, as with the transpacific pre-travel testing program, those who have been tested and only receive their results back after landing only need to quarantine until the negative test result has been uploaded to the Hawaii Health Dept. and the department has removed the passenger from the quarantine list.

Maui is still waiting for Governor Ige's written approval of the interisland quarantine waiver, with a negative COVID-19 test result, so we still recommend waiting until that is released before planning island hopping, and also building in ample days on each island in case there are delays with receiving the test results from Vault Health or elsewhere.
