Finnair Business Class between Los Angeles LAX and Helsinki will operate 3X weekly as of March 31, 2019, and as of time of writing there's good award availability on the days it operates (Tuesdays, Thursdays, Sundays), per Ben. Finnair's main route between Helsinki and the U.S. is New York JFK, and unfortunately Finnair business class award availability on that route is very poor.
It's often challenging to get nonstop business class award availability from the West Coast to Europe, so I recommend taking advantage of this if you're planning travel to Europe for spring or summer 2019. And as long as you're flying into Helsinki, I highly recommend visiting one of my favorite European cities, St. Petersburg, Russia, and staying at one of the best urban Four Seasons hotels in the world, the Four Seasons Lions Palace St. Petersburg.
And of course Helsinki is well connected to other European cities, with nonstop flights to Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Brussels, Budapest, Copenhagen, Dublin, Edinburgh, Frankfurt, Geneva, London, Madrid, Munich, Paris, Rome, Stockholm, Vienna, etc.
Here are the Finnair route details:
- Depart Los Angeles LAX 7:50pm, Arrive Helsinki HEL the next day at 4:05pm (AY2, 10 hours 35 minutes)
- Depart Helsinki HEL at 4:40pm, Arrive LAX 5:40pm (AY1, flight duration of 11 hours)
The flight will be operated by an A350, which has a reverse herringbone configuration similar to Cathay Pacific Business Class. Most solo travelers prefer this to Finnair's A330, which has a staggered configuration, unless they manage to obtain “throne” seat 2A, 4A or 6A on the A330.
Finnair Business Class Award Cost
The least expensive way to book Finnair Business Class is with American AAdvantage miles: 57,500 miles each way. Keep in mind that AAdvantage does not permit any free international stopovers.
Alternatively, you can book with Alaska miles for 70,000 Mileage Plan miles each way, with a free stopover in Helsinki.
Don't book with British Airways Avios, as you'd be paying 90,000 Avios each way, plus significant fees of >$500 for LAX-HEL and ~$200 HEL-LAX.
