Andaz London Liverpool Street Location and Check-In
The hotel is located at 40 Liverpool Street in East London, where it opened in 2007 (formerly the Great Eastern Hotel). It's right by Liverpool Street Tube Station, a 17 minute walk from the Tower of London and from London Bridge, 20 minute walk from St. Paul's Cathedral, a 15 min. tube ride from the British Museum, and about a 45 minute ride from London Heathrow Airport (LHR) on the Elizabeth line. London West End theaters are about a 15 minute tube ride. I arrived just after 2pm, and was swiftly checked in to my room on the 5th floor. I was offered a welcome drink, but declined since I had a meeting to get to.
.
Andaz London Liverpool Street Queen Room
I was traveling on a travel professional rate, so I received the room I booked, a Queen Room, which is just 279 square feet. Fortunately, Hyatt Prive clients are generally upgraded at time of booking (except for dates during anticipated high occupancy periods) so won't have to be in quite such a small room. King rooms are 312 square feet, King Deluxe Rooms are 355 sq. ft., and for families, there are some connecting rooms available. Andaz Suites vary considerably in size, from 322-527 sq. ft., while Andaz Large Suites are 559-742 sq. ft. and Andaz Design Suites are 861 sq. ft.
I'll be honest; after the hotel I'd just come from, this room was dark and depressing. Obviously most visitors don't spend a ton of time in their hotel room in London, but still. Depressing. It also didn't help that the mattress was incredibly firm and uncomfortable to sleep on. The Four Seasons this is not. There were also some annoying mechanical-type sounds from the 6th floor (my room was on the 5th floor) that kept me from getting to sleep for awhile. When I called down the Reception had no idea what it could be and offered to send an engineer up to listen, but I didn't really want someone in my room that late at night.
.
Fortunately, the bathroom, while very small, has great water pressure from the rain shower, and fluffy towels.
.
If you're looking for a bathrobe and slippers, there are slippers and a light cotton yukata style robe tucked away in a basket in the closet.
.
The closet has an ironing board and iron, for those who need to get work attire pressed.
.
As at other Andaz hotels, a nice feature is the complimentary non-alcoholic mini bar, with waters, orange juice, apple juice, and soda.
.
There's also a Nespresso machine and pods, as well as a hot water kettle.
.
Another feature is the complimentary wine hour in the lobby from 6-7pm, accompanied by DJ'd music. At about 6:15pm there were also a few canapes (smoked salmon on rye and an Arancini crispy mushroom rice ball) but these disappeared quickly.

Breakfast at Eastway Brasserie
Breakfast at Eastway Brasserie is served on weekdays 6:30-10am, and on weekends 7-11am. Hyatt Prive guests enjoy complimentary buffet breakfast. To get to Eastway Brasserie from the rooms, take the elevator to the 1st floor (not the ground floor), turn right, and follow the signs to the fire doors. On the right you'll need to press the green button (don't worry, no alarms will go off) in order to open these doors, then proceed down the stairs to the restaurant.
.
Once inside, the host will take your room number, seat you, and explain the buffet.
.
The buffet was good: salad fixings, fresh cut fruit (the pineapple was excellent, strawberries quite good), whole fruit, cold cuts, smoked salmon, cheese selection, pastries, cereals, dried fruit, nuts, hot items such as scrambled eggs, bacon, mushrooms, beans, etc.
.
Between the saucisson sec and the ferme des peupliers yogurts, the buffet had some French flair, although sadly the pastries were decidedly mediocre and not high quality.
.
There's also the option to order freshly prepared egg dishes, waffles, pancakes, and french toast from the following menu:
.
My poached egg was fine, and other egg dishes looked good, but I recommend steering clear of the pancakes: they were tough, probably overmixed, and should be taken off the menu.
.
The Verdict
My Andaz stay was very inconsistent. There were certainly positives, such as getting checked in quickly, the good water pressure in the shower and fluffy towels, and the complimentary wine hour, but also some significant negatives.
Pros:
- Quickly checked in
- Room available early, at 2pm, and 2pm late check-out also available
- Good shower water pressure, fluffy towels
- Complimentary mini bar
- Complimentary wine hour
- Good breakfast buffet, especially the French Ferme des Peupliers yogurts, fresh pineapple, smoked salmon, Bucheron goat cheese, poached egg
Cons
- Room has all the light and charm of a prison cell
- Super firm, uncomfortable mattress
- No power adapters in the room, and the first one supplied didn't work. Fortunately the second one did work
- Annoying sound from the 6th floor interfered with sleep
- Terrible pancake at breakfast, should be removed from the menu
