Our Recent Andaz 5th Avenue Review reviewed our stay generally, but this post will focus on breakfast at The Bar Downstairs and Kitchen and Andaz 5th Avenue room service, since we had two breakfasts and two room service orders over our two separate stays at the property.
Andaz 5th Avenue Breakfast at The Bar Downstairs and Kitchen
The Bar Downstairs and Kitchen, as its name implies, is located in the Andaz 5th Avenue's basement, so it's dark and windowless. It's open for breakfast daily from 6:30-11am, with weekend brunch served 6:30am-2pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
.
We asked to be seated at one of the banquettes by the far wall, which looked (and were) more comfortable than the regular chairs. The corner banquette is especially popular–we sat there the first time, but on our next visit it had been reserved by another family, in advance, even for breakfast.
.
After being seated we perused the menu. While our server wasn't familiar with how the Hyatt Prive breakfast benefit works, fortunately I'd proactively asked during check-in and had been told that we could enjoy one main course, one juice and one hot drink per person, up to two guests.
.
The strawberry orange juice was delicious, so much so that we chose it for both of our breakfasts.
.
The Avocado Toast with Poached Eggs on Multigrain Bread was fine, but nothing to write home about; I've had better avocado toast.
.
On the other hand, the Lobster Scrambled Eggs with Creme Fraiche was very good, and a great option if you want a savory option and enjoy lobster.
.
Still, our favorite breakfast dish by far was the Lemon Souffle Pancake with Orange Poppyseed Syrup–we ordered two of them for our second breakfast.
.
Room Service
An additional benefit of reserving with Hyatt Prive benefits is a $100 credit once per stay, so we used ours on both our stays to order room service. The room service menu isn't extensive, so we were able to try quite a few of its items over our two visits.
.
The Shishito Roast Peppers with Yuzu Mayo and Nori was fantastic; highly recommended if you like shishito peppers.
.
The Skuna Bay Salmon with Harissa Yogurt and Shaved Fennel was good as well. Our son liked the salmon itself, and the harissa yogurt, which wasn't that spicy, although we helped him with the fennel, which he was less of a fan of.
.
My husband got the Lobster Roll, which was satisfying and had a good amount of fresh lobster as well as a generous salad (which we'd requested in lieu of fries) alongside.
.
On our second visit we ordered a room service dinner. In retrospect we should have stuck with our lunch choices, as the dinner items we chose were less impressive.
My husband's Chicken Schnitzel was quite dry and plain, and we wouldn't recommend it.
.
My burger was perfectly fine, and the lager onions were especially good, but it was somewhat greasier than I'd hoped for.
.
The best dinner item was our son's Campanelle Pasta with kale, heirloom tomatoes, peas and parmesan. We can recommend this dish and the shishito peppers to guests wanting vegetarian choices.

The Verdict
Highlights of our dining experiences at the Andaz 5th Avenue were the Strawberry Orange Juice and Lemon Souffle Pancakes with Orange Poppyseed Syrup for breakfast and the Shishito Peppers, Salmon, Lobster Roll and Campanelle Pasta from the Room Service Menu.
While service at the Bar and Kitchen Downstairs was fine, I wasn't a fan of having breakfast in the dark, windowless subterranean setting, just too gloomy. Dining in our suite, with natural light, was much nicer.
If you've dined recently at the Andaz 5th Avenue in New York, what was your experience?
